Downloaded the new kernel Source from Mandrake update, now what do i do?

Downloaded the kernel source from mandrake update (kernel-source-2.6.3-16mdk)
Followed the instructions on the kernelupdate.ph page, and it says it's already installed. Do i need to do anything else? I tried to do what it said to lilo, and didn't see any new kernel enteries in there.

You have to add the kernel to lilo, if indeed one does exist.
Do us a favor, and post an ls of the following dir:

/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot

Junior41180 08-27-2004 09:06 AM

[junior@88 junior]$ ls /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot
bootsect.S compressed/ install.sh Makefile mtools.conf.in setup.S tools/ video.S
[junior@88 junior]$

silly n00b question, do i need to restart first??

You installed the source code files used to make a kernel. Look for the same package, but without the word source in the filename and install that instead. :)

If you are refering to the 2.6.3-16 kernel, all that was available via mandrake update, was the kernel source, and I have yet to see anywhere the other file, such as the kernel-2.6.3-15 that was available sometime last week.

So how would I go about doing so with the source? after all i need the kernel that supports up 4 gigs of ram because i have 1280 Megs of ram. I've never actually compiled/recompiled a kernel, so I'm not very familiar on how to do this.

Thanks for the help. :)

mandrake update doesn't offer updates for the kernel itself, only the source. go to the "install" software module & type kernel in the search. pick the kernel to match the source you downloaded, let it install, reboot. you should then have a new boot option in lilo showing the kernel version. boot from that. if all seems well (give it a day or 2 to make sure) you can safely remove the old kernel by going to MCC->remove software, typing kernel in the search & choosing the old kernel for removal. again, reboot for changes to take effect. you can then also edit lilo.conf to remove the kernel version line & just boot from the "linux" default entry (or whatever it is named in your lilo). remember to run lilo -v from terminal as root, then reboot for the change to take effect.

thank you.

will I have to set anything up again? or does it automatically import settings and stuff?

Check your local mnadrake mirror as Mandrake release all their packages as both source rpms and compiled rpms. In the updates folder for 10.0 there is a pre-compiled package.... kernel-i686-up-4GB-2.6.3.16mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm would be the one you're looking for. The Mandrake Control Centre sees this as an install, not an upgrade/update so you would have to have the FTP server added to urpmi. The server I use (in Ireland) is quite well up-to date. The Update RPMS are in ftp://ftp.esat.net/pub/linux/mandrak...ates/10.0/RPMS and the standard install RPMs are in ftp://ftp.esat.net/pub/linux/mandrak...Mandrake/RPMS.

If you open the update url in your favourite browser and download the file, double-clicking on it should start it off installing, and you will be asked for your root password, if you're not logged in as root.
