/dev/audio not there?

Since upgrading from 10 community to 10 Final, I've been unable to get sound to work. I've tried switching drivers, but that does nothing, and in configure desktop -> sound system -> hardware the audio device is set to autodetect, although changing that doesn't help either.

After a bit of looking around, I discovered that I'm missing both /dev/audio and /dev/sound/audio - I'm assuming that that's the problem. However, I have no idea how to fix it, and even less where to begin. I tried a Google search, but couldn't find anything.

In case it isn't that, other things that might be useful:
My Kmix settings have a green light above all the input and output settings, and the sliders are a bit above half way, except for the microphone, which is right at the bottom, and has the red light under it.
My sounds card is an Intel i810, I'm using the default driver
My WM is KDE, so my sound server is presumably arts, although I don't know how to confirm that.

check aumix settings if installed (type aumix in terminal or go to kicker->multimedia->sound). make sure nothing is muted there & all volumes are set. also, check in kontrol center->sound & check which drivers KDE set to be using (OS, aRts, alsa, auto detect, etc.) set to auto if it isn't already. restart KDE. you could also try runing (from terminal as root) sndconfig to see if it detects the card & can set up a driver.

The only thing that was muted was the mike input. It's autodetecting the drivers. Sndconfig says it doesn't recognise the sound card, but that it's a PCI and unsupported.
