dead.letter produced every night

Hi,

Every day I get an email from my system along the lines of:-
-----
/etc/cron.daily/msec:
Invalid or incomplete multibyte or wide character
. . . message not sent.
"//dead.letter" 3207/195917
------
When I then look in the / directory I find a file dead.letter which rapidly grows unless I delete it. The dead.letter contains things such as:-
-----

Security Warning: World Writable files found :
- /Backup/MDK2007/public/.recycle/sync_files
- /Backup/MDK2007/public/Download/AdbeRdr707_en_US.exe
- /Backup/MDK2007/public/Download/AdobeReader305-PalmOS.exe
- /Backup/MDK2007/public/Download/AgPalmEN.exe
- /Backup/MDK2007/public/Download/CardExport2.prc
- /Backup/MDK2007/public/Download/CardExport200En.zip
- /Backup/MDK2007/public/Download/CardExport219EnEE.zip
-------

Does anyone have any idea how to correct this ?

Thanks

John

dead.letter is caused when a process wants to send a message but can't. I would like at making the output of that cron job silent by redirecting the output to a file or to /dev/null (to completely get rid of it).

I have the same problem, our serveur run MDV 2006 since a few month witouth any problem, after upgrading to MDV 2007.1, i have the dead letter problem, but i think the problem comme between MDV and CrontAt because when i have the bad letter insite there is :
Subject : Cron <root@alpha> nice -n 19 run-parts --report /etc/cron.daily

/etc/cron.daily/awffull:
Current Locale: C
Message Catalog: /usr/share/locale
Nessage Domain: awffull
Lang: (null)
Language: (null)
41334 records in 2.01 seconds, 20564 l/sec
/etc/cron.daily/msec:
Invalid or incomplete multibyte or wide character
. . message not sent.
"//dead.letter" 2953/299101
Invalid or incomplete multibyte or wide character
. . message not sent.
"//dead.letter" 2065/138038
/etc/cron.daily/tarjours.sh:
building file list ...
0 files... 100 files... 200 files...283 files to consider
.....................................

BUT if in a shell i use the command :
[root@alpha ~]# nice -n 19 run-parts --report /etc/cron.daily
/etc/cron.daily/awffull:
Current Locale: fr_FR
Message Catalog: /usr/share/locale
Nessage Domain: awffull
Lang: fr_FR
Language: fr_FR:fr
42066 records in 1,69 seconds, 24891 l/sec

as we see this time local, lang and language are correctly detected, and every thing went ok after in the shell.

John

there are 2 issues 1 the warnings and 2 your mail settings.

are you still on Mdk 9?

you can change the permissions of backup files without any fear of corruption so do you use the shell or a file manager like konqueor?
