Crazy internet behavior - partial internet

I have a fresh install of Mandrak 10.1 (free) on my Shuttle SN41G2. I am experiencing some difficulties with the internet. I am able to connect to a few select sites like nvidia.com; however I am unable to connect to sites such as google.com and hotmail.com. When attempting to load these pages I get a Server Timeout error on port 80. I am configured to connect to the internet through an ethernet cable connected to my Router/DSL modem via the "LAN" configuration setting. The "LAN" setting is the only one that produces and results. I would like to get full access to the internet. Any suggestions?

I would like better information about your connection if possible.

1) Is your computer connected directly to the modem, or is there a router in between?

2) Is your Internet connection ADSL (using your phone lines), or cable (using co-axial cable)?

3) Is your Internet connection working ok in another OS (specify if it is on the same computer or a different one)?

I think I can help if my questions are answered.

To answer your questions:

1) My computer is connected directly to a Wireless Gateway/ADSL modem via an ethernet cable. Specifically it is an ActionTec GT701-WG.

2) My connection is ADSL (through Qwest with MSN as my ISP)

3) I Dual boot this machine with WindowsXP and everything works great.

Let me know if you need any more information. Thanks in advance!

Is the Wireless Gateway/ADSL modem a combination router and ADSL modem (both router and modem in one box)?

In your Windows installation, did you have to provide your user name and password?

Also, do you have ICQ?

If so we can do this there as well

Sorry I don't have ICQ (lost my password 5 years ago and am stubborn about it).

In Windows, I did NOT have to provide a user name/password. I set up my internet connection settings through a browser connection (192.168.0.1). So in Windows and my Mac there is little that needs to be configured to get the internet working.

I had similar problems with Mandrake 10.1 and Fedora Core 3 and my DSL-based Internet connection when I shifted from Mandrake 9.2 until I disabled IPv6. Run /sbin/ifconfig. If you entries in the output for IPv6 (they will be lines beginning with "inet6 addr"), you might try disabling IPv6 temporarily to see if that solves your network access problems. To disable IPv6, switch to root, and add the following line to the end of /etc/modprobe.conf:

alias net-pf-10 off

Then reboot and test your Internet access. If it doesn't fix the problem, just remove that line from /etc/modprobe.conf and reboot and nothing will be impacted.

I will be curious to see if this fixes your problem. I spent almost two weeks trying (with help on a couple of these forums) trying to track down this problem before a kind soul pointed me at this.

Hope this helps!

I'm glad it worked for you! I can't take credit for anything, however, other than passing along the wisdom of other people here on these forums that know /way/ more than I ever will...
