Compiling SATA support into the 9.2 kernel

I am trying to install 9.2 onto my Seagate SATA disk. Trouble is, 9.2 does not have any SATA drivers, so the installer (off CDs) does not even see the hard disk.

I do, however, have a 1.2 Gb scratch disk for situations such as this. So,

Where do I get SATA drivers for the Silicon Image chipset?
How do I add them to the make to include in the recompiled kernel?
How do I maintain all the current modules in the vanilla Mandrake compilation of the kernel?
How do I install this on the SATA disk? Can I install to the 1.2 Gb scratch, add the new kernel to it, and just copy all the files to the 80 Gb SATA disk?
How do I get LILO to recognize which is the boot disk?
Despite all my talk of compilation, etc. I have never done even ONE on Linux, let alone a kernel compilation, so be gentle!

It's a sort of chicken-and-egg situation, isn't it? You have to have the installation on the SATA disk before you can install on the SATA disk.
