Hi,

Yes you can.

You need to use a programme called "scim"

You can find extra guidance here:

http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Dapper#H...hod_.28SCIM.29

This is for Debian based systems but tells you the packages to install.

Question But what is this?

Well, it seems that this is the answer but what is it writing about.
Extracted from the link:
How to install Chinese Input Method (SCIM)

The following advices are outdated and it could be hard to revert to normal afterwards. Please follow instead the official Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake guide HERE

Please note that scim is now installed by default in Dapper, and installing Chinese, Japanese or Korean Support is done using System>Administration>Language Support. The wiki details the method more thoroughly

* Read #General Notes
* Read #How to add extra repositories
* Read #How to install Extra Fonts

sudo apt-get install scim
sudo apt-get install scim-chinese
sudo apt-get install scim-config-socket
sudo apt-get install scim-gtk2-immodule
sudo apt-get install scim-tables-zh
wget -c http://easylinux.info/uploads/fireflysung-1.3.0.tar.gz
sudo tar zxvf fireflysung-1.3.0.tar.gz -C /usr/share/fonts/truetype/
sudo chown -R root:root /usr/share/fonts/truetype/fireflysung-1.3.0/
sudo fc-cache -f -v

* System -> Preferences -> SCIM Input Method Setup
* To activate SCIM

Press 'Ctrl + Space'
What is the :"sudo apt-get install scim
sudo apt-get install scim-chinese
sudo apt-get install scim-config-socket
sudo apt-get install scim-gtk2-immodule
sudo apt-get install scim-tables-zh
wget -c http://easylinux.info/uploads/fireflysung-1.3.0.tar.gz
sudo tar zxvf fireflysung-1.3.0.tar.gz -C /usr/share/fonts/truetype/
sudo chown -R root:root /usr/share/fonts/truetype/fireflysung-1.3.0/
sudo fc-cache -f -v"?
Is it a command that must be typed? Arent there a GUI installer?

Question Also once i installed scim do i need to do additional settings on any other software?

Do i need to set any configuration after scim is installed to display them correctly like settings in OOo (Openoffice.org),one of the media player or even konqueror etc?

Hi,

That guidance I sent you is for Debian based systems, you are running Mandrake that has a different (but somewhat similar) system of installing software. You need to install the following packages using your Mandrake software tool (I don't know it's name off the top of my head)

scim
scim-chinese
scim-config-socket
scim-gtk2-immodule (You may not need this one if you use KDE)
scim-tables-zh
(Maybe some form of scim pinyin too)

scim worked in openoffice for me.

As for displaying Chinese characters on your system that is not handled by scim, that is handled by your system, you will need to install Chinese fonts (e.g. xfonts-intnl-chinese) and set your locale to China/Chinese and maybe some other things, I have never had to carry out that task.

In summary, there are two tasks you are asking about here.

1. Chinese input with scim
2. Chinese localisation with your system settings (Maybe Kcontrol/KDE control centre if you are using KDE)
