Chinese Encoding and printing
 

Have recived email writen in Chinese characters in Evolution
Selected Chinese Simplified (GB-2312} inorder to see and print this address in order to edit and add english text so local post can read and forward to China
Copy and paste to Text Editor then click save When read from saved dir it is not shown as it was saved but some chinese characters and emptyboxes
View Set encoding on this text address and have tried all four Chinese encoding.
Still not able to print out the saved Chinese email address in order to print it on mail envelope
Any help with this

As far as I can tell - UTF-8 encoded characters can be cut and past between apps, so... have you tried something obvious like pasting to a wordprocessor and printing from there?

Yes have copied and pasted to Kwrite after using view set enccoding Chinese simplfied save file to /home/ma/p.r.china and it prints square boxes for chinese characters ,English prints as normal.
Looks like you can not have English text in file along with Chinese characters
I may have to print out the Chinese address glue it on envelope and write P.R China in english for NZ mail to read

It probably won't happen automatically - you may have to manually change the font for bit with the chinese in the wordprocessor. Hmmm ... chinese fonts don't come up automatically, so my guess would be that your wordprocessor dosn't have chinese font rendering by default and you have to set it up.

You could look through the character maps... I'll see what I can find.

Does this come out... 氒气氕氐民氒氓 ... I wonder....? I can view both chinese and english simultaniously with open-office writer... but I havn't tried pasting from another application. (I have to paste from the character map so far.) If you can type chinese into a wordpro you should be able to paste chinese to it...

What you really need is a system configured for Chinese... there was a thread I was responding to awhile back about how to get chinese fonts to render in an english native system. I'll have to go look for it though...

You can view the chinese characters in screen... get a screenshot, then use an image editor to excise the text you want, then paste that to a wordprocessor as a graphic, then print that! (OK. there is a better way, but if you're in a hurry and don't mind the convoluted approach...

have you tried copying to an html editor?

OK - I can copy and paste this line to open-office writer - however, only characters 5 and 7 come out - probably because I only have simplified chinese enabled in the writer and I wrote that in han... if you have been experiencing similar problems, you may need to enable traditional chinese in your wordpro.

I found that the *help* for this in open ffice was listed under "asian language support" (the usual gwai-loh prejudice lumping half the globe together as if there were no distinction). So if you've looked for "chinese language <anything>" you won't find anything.
