cd and dvd drives swapped!?!?

hey all,

I am a noob on linux but i want to get to know it to ditch windows. It all seems very complicated tho :/ but i've been using windows since 3.11 version neway i installed it fine but what i want to do is get the internet working on it cuz thats what i use the most. To do this i have to put in my linux installation dvd cuz it needs some files off it before it can set the net up. It says please enter your linux dvd BUT the cd drive opens not the dvd drive. I've tryed a few things like just putting my dvd in the dvd drive but linux thinks that that is the cd drive and wont read it :s I don't really wanna mess around with the way its setup cuz i dont really know what im doin. best to be safe than sorry! if somebody could give me some easy instructions on how to swap them round that would be fantastic!

thanks for reading

Bob.

I would need to know what version of linux your are installing. However if you fell comfortable opening up your computer you count jest swtch the cables of your DVD and CDROM drive. If they don't use cable select cables then you would need to switch jumper settings. Also, if neither of those ideas make you feel comfortable just uplug the power cable from the back of your CDROM then complete the install the plug it back in, this will fore the computer to use the DVD.

hi frank,

i don't really wanna open my computer and fiddle about with the cables in there because i have windows xp running on the same computer and if i changed anything inside the computer it would change settings in windows. i use the linux boot menu u see and just choose to boot windows or linux. Windows xp dosn't have this problem with the swapped cd and dvd drive so i think it is a problem with the seting in mandriva linux.
i have mandriva linux 2006 i586. So i really just need instructions on how to change settings in the os to correct this problem!?

thanks,

Bob.

Put your Mandriva DVD in the drive you wish to use. Run the Mandriva Control Center and go to the Software section. Choose the Installation Source (or something similar) option. Your sources will be listed, select the dvd source and edit it, so that the drive section matches the ones for the drive you wish to use, e.g. /dev/hdc to something like /dev/hdd
