Cant press enter for install

Im trying to install mandrake 9.2 on a Compaq P-3 that has a USB keyboard. The install disk runs and brings up the window to either press "f1" for more options or "enter" to install. But pressing any key does nothing. I know it works.
I tried to use my wifes keyboard, it plugs into other type, or serial port I guess :D I dont know what its called its the purple plug with the pins.
And it wont work either, I guess the bios dont recognize it since its never conected to that cpu before.
Anyway I cant press the enter key to start the install any ideas, is there a work around?

well for starters just for your knowledge its a MINI-DIN or a PS/2 port ..
anyways, go into your BIOS and see if "usb keyboard support" is "enabled"

Sorry I should have been more clear, the Usb keyboard is the one that came with the computer its also a Compaq

BTW for future reference and just in case you did... do not plug / unplug PS/2 keyboard and mouse with power on.

Did you ever check the BIOS options? Did you plug the keyboard into the correct connector? The keyboard is the connector closest to the bottom or outside edge of the case.

I cant check the bios they dont seem to come up, the boot just stalls at the "Compaq" screen when I press F10. With out pressing anything the boot process goes through windows scan disk thing (because windows was not shut down cleanly blah blah)and stalls just after the windows 2000 splash screen.
So if the F10 stops the boot, I guess the keyboard works but just under windows?? If the F10 key works why wouldnt the enter key work on the mandrake install screen ? Ive also tried Knoppix and PClinuxOS live CD's with the same results.
Windows just wont go away its like a bad dream
