Unhappy Can't install 10.0 - Kernel error?????

I just picked up a computer for cheap and was planning on turning it into a server. But from the get go I have a serious problem. I insert the CD and start the install only to have it give me the following:

kernel BUG at drivers/ide/ide-iops.c:1005!
invalid operand: 0000 [#1]

<0> Kernel panic: fatal exception in interrupt
In interrupt handler - not syncing

I was able to look up the specs of the computer at the gateway site. Here's the link: http://support.gateway.com/support/s...?sn=0012854972

I am a BIG TIME NEWBIE, any insight and direction would be very helpful.

Thanks,
John

It seems the kernel is having an ide error. Check to see that all your cables are connected properly (or if you're unfamilar with that, have a computer tech give them a quick glance). If they are, it's also possible that a piece/some pieces of your hardware are faulty and/or dead. If you've had a different OS on the computer recently this probably isn't the case.

Anyway, I would try using some different distributions (maybe those utilizing the 2.4 or even 2.2 trees of the kernel, like debian woody) and see if that started working. Another course of action is to try a "live CD" distribution like Knoppix. Sorry I suggest only debian based distributions, but I'm just not that familiar with other "legacy" supported GNU/Linux systems.

Others may have better ideas. Good luck!

I currently have M$ 95 installed and that boots fine.

I will let you know the results from a couple Live CD's I have.

Thanks,
John

I tried both MandrakeMove and Suse Live. They both work fine. Now I am truely lost. Oh well, I'll keep on trying.
