Can't get into Mandrake 10.1

Ok basically I can't go into the graphical side of Mandrake. Now the xorg.conf file is there and everything is good but when I type startx it comes up with error messages. I have a feeling that I might have to reinstall and not use the X Server as I think that might be causing some problems. Basically could someone tell me why I can't go into the desktop. What is going on? Please help!

try typing
init 5
see how that goes
