Can't configure /etc/apt/sources.list. Format?

I installed apt on my Mandriva 2008.0 system, but it's useless until I can get the file /etc/apt/sources.list configured correctly. The file itself has help, but it doesn't help. I have tried numerous variations of this:

rpm ftp://.../200.8/i586/media/ media_info/hdlist_main main/release

But when I issue the apt-get update command, it fetches a bunch of stuff then says

E: Dynamic MMap ran out of room
E: Error occured while processing minisip (NewVersion1)
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/mirrors...2008.0_i586_media_media%5finfo_hdlist%5fcontrib
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

The description of the Mandriva package includes the following statement:

"Under development, use at your own risk!"

Probably for good reason.

Fair enough. But I can't use it, even at my own risk, if I can't configure it.

If you want to use apt why not just run Debian? If you run Mandriva why not use it's native install urpmi?

Since this is an inquiry as to why KenJackson is unable to configure apt, the first question I have to ask is Did you install the Mandriva package using the Mandriva Software installer? From your post it appears that you used rpm. I installed apt using urpmi and got the following:
Quote:
[root@curious ernie]# urpmi apt
To satisfy dependencies, the following packages are going to be installed:
Package Version Release Arch
(medium "contrib")
apt 0.5.15lorg3> 5mdv2008.0 i586
apt-common 0.5.15lorg3> 5mdv2008.0 i586
libapt-pkg0 0.5.15lorg3> 5mdv2008.0 i586
2.1MB of additional disk space will be used.
Proceed with the installation of the 3 packages? (Y/n)
If you did not install all three packages, that may be your trouble.

HTH,
