Building Kernel (mdkcustom) -- Magic Version error!
I need to install the ATi drivers for my Asus 9600XT 128mb.
Using the install script gives me an "Invalid Module Format" error when loading ATi's kernel module, so I decided to recompile my own kernel (perhaps the rpm kernel by Mandrake has DRM enabled, and I read I need to disable it). So, when I build my own (apart from getting some "ivtv" error compiling, which I needed to disable and rebuild) customized kernel, "2.6.3-13mdkcustom", and try to boot it, reiserfs cannot load, saying something like Version magic: "2.6.3-13mdkcustom PENTIUMIII" should be "2.6.3-13mdk PENTIUMIII" Therefore, I'm still not able to even compile my own kernel (damnit)   :tisk: Please, help! Self response
Well, I've got one good news and one bad news!
Good news: I've made it work! Here's how: Downloaded a new kernel Mandrake just released, and followed instructions. It plainly worked. What happened? In the last try, I had tried to compile my kernel a few times (some of these were successfully). So, with just makeing it, it changed some files in the source tree (that's why they say you should do make mrproper, but I didn't think it had to be done even if I wasn't compiling my kernel!!). The thing is the module was compiling for target "2.6.3-xmdkcustom". But if you leave the source tree as it comes, it can compile to various targets (at least that's what Mandrake says! -- in the source README). Ok, now I have a nice 3d working desktop!. But... Bad new: it hangs!!! GOD DAMN YOU ATi! Yes! It crashes! After a minute or two of using some OpenGL thing (be it TuxRacer or Ephoria screensaver -- didn't test with glxgears), it just hangs. The mouse moves, but no other response is given (can't change vt, restart X or anything -- would like to try ssh from another machine). Will search for it. Bye, NachoKB! |
