Boxed Version (Some retailing questions)

Hi everybody,

alright - I admit it: I am increasingly falling in love with this Operatins System commonly known as Linux and am considering purchasing the Mandrake Powerpack. I have tested the download version for a month or so. In this version, naturally a few options are not included so I was wondering if some of you guys could give me some infos on this (those who have made the purchase already, I presume)

1) How about Flash/Shockwave: I see in the product details of MPP9.2 that the CrossOver Plugins as well as Opera (I assume with the adds?) are preinstalled, but does this work, I mean can I actually view flash and shockwave content in Opera? (Not that I mind all to much, but I am kinda addicted to email chess, and my programm of choice is shockwavebased)

2) Personal opinion - buy 9.2 now or wait for 10? I just saw 10RC1 being released so this made me wonder a bit... What do you think?

Please gimme a bit of your blues on this, and who knows - there might just yet be another (this time: paying) penguin joining the herd...

Yours,

Napper

I'm waiting for the powerpack version 10. I'm gonna buy that one :)

If you have the patience, you might consider waiting for v.10; it looks like it will be worth it with updated software/upgrades.

If you can't wait, you can get the 1st 3 Power Pack CD's from http://www.easylinuxcds.com/linux_sy...wer_pack.shtml for $8.95. I got them from $5.49 from the same source when I used PayPal, though I haven't been able to use since my LG drive died during install. Dell is giving me a new one tomorrow!

BTW - You can download a Mozilla Flash player from Macromedia:

I'd wait for version 10 powerpack.

Opera - well, it's irrelevant whether it's included, because you'll probably find that the version on the disc is out of date. You just have to go to the opera site and download the latest version try the "shared QT" version for your mandrake setup, then just click the rpm. If you really have prob's then just get the static version instead.

As far as the flash player etc is concerned, just go to the macromedia site and get what you can from there - there's some instructions for the install. If you want to use it under opera, then you usually have to go to the plugins section of opera and "switch it on" - maybe try mozilla or konqueror they seem to "switch it on" as soon as it's installed (you should check it here bcause if it's working ok you'll have a bloody good laugh at the flash music video's).

While youre waiting for version 10, try another flavour. download knoppix, burn the disc, if it boot's/run's ok, just stop it there, then go to their forums site and read up about knoppix hard disc installing. It's as easy as manddrake and the hardware detection is excellent - you'd still have to install the flsh/shockwave, but what the hell, when mandrake 10 comes along, you just install it over the top instead (or get greedy like me and find out how you have multiple versions of linux install, so it depends on your mood, as to what you want to run.

But yes, buy the mandrake, but wait for 10 (it's due to have kde 3.2, a 2.6 series kernel and lot's of other stuff).

John

KDE 3.2, kernel 2.6, and the new command center alone will make v. 10 worth it.

I agree with bigjohn though, stick with Mandrake either way! :)

Thanks Guys.....is eveyone waiting for v.10

i ordered the 9.2 powerpak last night......

oh well,

But after 2 weeks trying to get the Sun JDS people to answer some simple questions....questions that u folks answered in a matter of hours...i don't think that it was a bad decision....

Hi everybody!

Thanks for your many replies - however, you make all this sound so easy! Have I missed out on news in the last few days? I thought Shockwave was NOT actually available for Linux and the only way to get around this was to use something like the CrossOver Office Plugins (not included in the download edition of Mandrake but in the Discovery Edition onwards). Are you saying there is another way?

About the 9.2 -> 10 issue: yeah, I'll wait until v10 comes out, too...

Napper 02-25-2004 01:08 AM

To bigjohn: All these flavors surely are tempting. However, I kinda am spending to much time on the pc anyway, so I have to cut down a bit here and there. :)

So addicting!

bigjohn 02-25-2004 02:52 AM

It's handy to have a knoppix disc available anyway. Then if you go round to a friends place, and they ask about the linux, you can just throw the disc in, boot it (if the cdrom drive will/can boot - don't forget, sometimes you have to change BIOS settings, so it looks for an OS in the cdrom first, then if not it just boots the hard drive).

Then you can often "show them what they're missing" - if it proves a little slow, it's usually thta the friend has a dinosaur computer i.e ou of the stong ages.

To BigJohn - alright - I'll give this a shot. Still, what about shockwave now?

jkibbe 02-25-2004 06:36 AM

I don't know of any way to play shockwave within linux, except...

Codeweavers offers CrosssOver Plugin for $39.95. It allows you to use your Windows plugins under linux. They offer a free trial, also...

bigjohn 02-25-2004 07:34 AM

it's probably worth a look at the macromedia site, and see what they say about it.

personally I've got a copy of the latest cross over office in front of me.

Napper 02-25-2004 08:47 AM

lol - alright, never mind me. I kinda thought this to be a more straight forward question (at least, considering the usual type of things I post in fori). Didn't expect it to be such a vague area as it appears to be. Well, what I have found out in the past:

1) There is no shockwave plugin for Linux, at least none from Macromedia
2) CrossOver Office PLUGINS ($39.95) includes a shockwave plugin and thus should make shockwave possible on Linux systems
3) If one checks out the Mandrake product COMPARISON, there is a little box called "CrossOver Plugins Limited" included in all retail versions, but not the download version

Hence, theoretically if I actually buy Mandrake, I should be able to see shockwave movies, or (at least) play that little chess game of mine. Only question now was if somebody here actually DID buy a copy of Mandrake and if it does really work ('course that would make those boxes a mighty fine deal). More of a yes or no kinda deal kinda questions. :)

bigjohn 02-26-2004 06:15 PM

Well, to be honest, having had 2 mandrake boxed set versions, I can't honestly say whether it worked or not.

I've always been more of a "click on it, if it works, great, if not, cest la vive".

All I really know about either shockwave or flash, is that they are something to do with clever animation's etc, as to which does what, I couldn't say.

Erm, if you still have a windows install, go along to "rather good" and check out some of the "music video's". I managed to get them going with mandrake, but as I say, whether it was shockwave or flash ?????

I guess it's already too late since you ordered, but I just bought the Mandrake PowerPack (9.2), and I version I got includes the next two boxed versions, so when 10 comes out, they'll send it to me. And 10.1 or whatever comes afterwards.

I'm curious what you need Shockwave for. I haven't seen a site with Shockwave in ages. Flash for Linux is available and not too hard to install. As long as I can view www.homestarrunner.com, that's about all I need for plug-ins. And there's Java support for sites that have Java applets running.
