Black screen after changing display resloution

Dearest Mandrivers,

in a boost of self confidence I tried to change the my display resolution from 1024x768 to "Auto". Since I've got Mandriva 08 installed on a wide screen Toshiba Satellite Pro M40 the display has been kind of "streched out". It says ok, please log in and log out, and when I do so the screen turns black. Now I can't boot the computer in any mode without getting stuck at the same black screen - what am I to do?

I will be deadly thankful for your help since I've got monday's hand-in on the hard drive...

Best regards
/satunge

Hi, you no doubt get dumped into a cli screen.

What you need to do toi get back to gui mode is to reconfigure your x settings.

You can do that by running xorgconfig as root.

This will help get the display back, the defaults [are in brackets, all you need to do id hit enter]are usually workable.

see how you go.

cheers, Glenn

Dearest Glenn,

unfortunately nothing happens when I put the defaults back (if you mean by pressing F2 at startup, then putting back the defaults, saving and continue startup?) I just get back to the black screen. If it gives you any clue I don't hear the usual startup sound either, so I presume there is something more to the problem than just the display being blank?

Thanks a million tough!

Hi, you might be able to change the resolution of the display

With "ctrl+alt+-" to reduce, or "ctrl+alt++" to increase the resolution , can be pressed multiple times/steps.

unless you feel like using the cd/dvd rom to resetup the display using the upgrade to.. selection.

you can upgrade to the same version you have.

Hope this helps, Glenn

Actually I don't mean pressing F2. That is for the kernel,

you need to change the resolution of X when it starts.

So after you login manually, try the above ctrl+alt+(+ or -) to the next resolution the display can handle.

It's probably not the kernel at fault.

I do feel like a total newbie, but I don't think I get to log in manually? The display turns black before I can do really anything. Now Ive partitioned my hard drive and installed Ubuntu, which also just gives me a blank display after startup? I write this while running Ubuntu from a live CD.

Thanks for trying, I'm really lost!
