Best install options for an older PC

I have installed Mandrake 9.2 on an older PC, PII 350Mhz with 64MB of ram. (I tried to install Mandrake 10.0, but the install would fail when recognizing the hardware.) With the new install of 9.2, the system "appears" to run very slow, slower than the previous Win98 OS that I removed.

My question: what are the best install options for an older system, where I can still have the best performance possible with a desktop using a browser, email, and OpenOffice?

Thanks in advance, Eric

the key is probably in the window manager.

IceWM or something would be much more suited then a KDE based system. Even Gnome uses less resources,
mandrake 10.0 on a 266 celeron here but i couldnt live without KDE so just put up with slowness on secondary PC

well thats about it.
if you know what your doing
recompile your kernel to custom and suit your system to make it smaller.
