Back to 1GB memory

i removed half my memory to install 9.1. I have done all the updates, except for a few Xfree because of driver problems...would those updates have solved the Problem that stops mandrake from booting with 1GB or more of memory and if not how can i fix that now that i have mandrake installed?

courtrrb 10-02-2003 03:02 PM

All you have to do is change to the MDK kernel that support 1g or more of memory.

michaelk 10-02-2003 06:38 PM

What is courtrrb is saying is that you have to recompile the kernel to enable high memory support.

Unless you have the enterprise edition and then its included.

quatsch 10-02-2003 06:44 PM

do you really need to recompile the kernel? From what I hear, it's just a little bug in the installer that you can circumvent by passing
vga=0
mandrake itself is fine with 1gig or more of memory.

michaelk 10-02-2003 07:06 PM

I believe that ithe vga=0 is a workaround for a bug in the installer.

Once installed to take advantage you need to select the enterprise kernel or if you don't have it you will need to recompile the kernel.

Its just what I have read in other forums.

lex0429,
So does MDK boot with the rest of the memory installed? And does it see the full 1gb of RAM?

quatsch 10-02-2003 07:52 PM

it seems to work with 1GB of memory once you get around the installer bug:

Thanks

courtrrb 10-02-2003 08:11 PM

No I didn't say anything about recompiling he kernel. mdk has one in the contribes already compiled. Go out to the PLF and set your source for contrubis.

quatsch 10-02-2003 08:15 PM

but it looks like you don't even have to switch the kernel. I would just plug in the memory and see what happens. (BACKUP beforehand, naturally).

i tried stickin the memory back in and the same problem occurs.. the command "Linux vga=0" works for the install but after that your stuck with the flashing caps and scroll lock keys and it wont boot...anyone got any ideas?

quatsch 10-02-2003 10:23 PM

if you are prepared to do a reinstall, check out this site:
