audio/video playback problem

Hi all!
my computer:
athlon k7 1300mhz
512 DDR
asus a7a266 mobo (latest bios)
80gb maxtor
Geforce 2ti
mandrake 9.2 no dual boot (w/ latest nvidia drivers)

here come my problems: audio and video playback is jercky, skipping, crackling and making everything unpleasant it could do.
it happens with all kind of audio files and for video divx svcd xvid and vcd.
it crackles even during the login system sound.

the problem has been there since my first install.
it gets worse when I have other jobs ongoing (xmule mainly but other such as office, photo viewing,...).
I thought it could be a cpu or general sys load related issue but top gives me a very comfortable output giving max 20% cpu load (not constant) and sys load less than 1. my 512mb ram are constantly almost used. during normal use (browser-mail-xmule-gaim) it has 5mb free. Maybe that's the problem?
I have bad playback even when I have 100mb free though!

anyone has clues????
thank you in advance for helping!!!!

PS: Linux rules!!!!!!!!!
