Audio? Do I need aRts if I have Jack?

Hi, I in the process of setting up a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) In mandriva 2008.0

I'm wanting to simplify the inter program connections, and

I've read that Jack does what aRts does.

Do I need aRts if I have Jack?

As far as I understand those are two completely different things. Jack is a sound server, and aRts is is a synthesizer... I don't know in what respect "Jack does what aRts does", but you can't use jack as a synthesizer.

I have never tried Mandriva... could you report back how it worked for you?

Oh, I should have read that.

Now I see why I would need them.

aRts is a synth for the window manager sounds.(?)

and jack is a patch-bay.

I can't seem to monitor all devices, though where I expect them.
