Audigy sound card
 

Need help I cannot get any sound from my sound card.
Mandrake 10
I have a cable connected from the Dvd Rom to the sound card as I thought this might be the problem but no luck . I have checked the drivers and the Audigy ones are loaded

Most current CD/DVD drives no longer need the cable connection to the sound card. This is a vestige of the old analog system. Nowadays the drives extract the audio digitally and send the data along the existing IDE cable.

OK... I may have spoke too soon. Specifically, what are you trying to do, and with what program?

I just want to hear some sound.
I am using KsCD which loads automatically and plays the CD but alas no sound:confused:
I am using Mandy 10 for the first time and I am setting things up that do not work properly as I come across them.
The next job after the sound is to load the Nvidia drivers for my graphics card.

Have you tried Totem or Xine to play your CDs? I'm having the same issue with KsCD. The other two I mentioned play my CDs just fine.

It's not you, it's KsCD. Apparently it does require that analog cable that doesn't come included on most systems anymore.

If you are not hearing _any_ sound at all (like mp3s played through xmms or videos through xine) your driver might be misconfigured.
It was this way with my Audigy card.

This is what helped in my case:
o) open up the console
o) su to root
o) issue the "harddrake2" command & press enter
o) wait for the detection of devices
o) find the Audigy card and select "Configure Device"
o) change the Driver to "audigy"
o) quit and restart

While rebooting you should hear a cracking sound when the card is initialized.
After reboot, start up a mp3 or video player and check if you hear any sound.
Make sure you turned up to volume! (Yeah, you never know... :D ).

Andy X still no good as it was allready configured correctly, any other suggestions?.

if you're sure your card is detected correctly but are still getting no sound, try running aumix to set your volumes & make sure nothing is muted. it's in kicker->multimedia->sound. if it isn't there, install it from the MDK CD's using Mandrake Control Center or in terminal as root do urpmi aumix. aumix is the system wide sound control. if that solves it, save the settings before exiting.

Installed aumix, nothing was muted but still no joy.
This is really starting to bug me now :scratch:

I'm going out on a limb here... do you have sound in another operating system if you have a dual boot?
I'm thinking that maybe there is a loose connection on the outside of the computer.

It is a dual boot [ XP Home & Mandrake 10 ] but no loose connections as it works fine in XP Home.

Does your motherboard have onboard sound? Sometimes that will get in the way. I had upgraded my BIOS, and the onboard sound system had been inadvertently reactivated. Gave linux fits until I realized what had happened.

Something just isn't right here I use the SB Audigy and never set anything up I just worked! It worked very well!
What version of alsa are you using?

How do I find out the version of alsa

I have my doubts about Mandrake 10... :mad:

But anyway, I use Mandrake 9.1 and what I did was go to the Mandrake Control Center. Go under hardware and manually pick your sound card. Try them all and see if you get sound.
