ATI CARD WORKING (WITH 3D ACCELERATION) ON LE 2005!!

Just thought you all should see this thread in particular, been trying to solve this issue for the last 3 days or more, and just recently in the last hour found the solution, well for my system anyway, here or here

Both are links to the same post, just different ways to access them.
I cannot guarantee this will work for everyone, but it is certainly worth a shot!

This should all be done from within a console:
go to Konsole as normal, type su, then type in the password, then type init 3, hit enter, and you will be brought into a terminal, type root, then login once more with the password, then perform the instructions .

Oh, also on another side note, I only had to apply the first patch, mostly because it rejected the second one :P. Another thing too. Make certain that you run chmod 777 make_install.sh, it is very important. But as for sh make.sh, you may try it if you wish, but I only got an error while trying to run it. After all this is done, simply reboot or restart x, and with any luck you should be all set.

What version of the ATI drivers are you using? Is this patch required for the latest (14.13 i believe?)

I sort of have it working, but it locks up my machine when I reboot. Will this fix that?

paull2k1 07-04-2005 01:34 AM

Well, it really depends on your version of Mandriva (Mandrake) Linux you are running.
From my understanding, it goes as follows:
Mandrake Linux 10.0 = XFree86 4.3-30 > use this driver: fglrx_4_3_0-8.14.13-1.i386.rpm
Mandrake Linux 10.1 = X.org 6.7.0-3 > (Try running Mandrakelinux update) if there's an upgrade to X.Org 6.8.2 or later, use this driver: fglrx_6_8_0-8.14.13-1.i386.rpm
Mandrake Linux 10.2 (Mandriva LE 2005) = X.Org 6.8.2 > use this driver: fglrx_6_8_0-8.14.13-1.i386.rpm

Also, if you are still not sure of what version of XFree86 or X.Org, run this file: Check.sh

PS: I really don't know much about this issue, seeing as I had it solved thanks to the advice of this site (which was posted in the initial posting) recently on midnight of July 2nd, 2005. I hope this helps somewhat.

And to my understanding, the patch is required for Linux Kernel's which are greater than or equal 2.6.10, Mandriva LE 2005, has Kernel 2.6.11-3 by default, so the patch is necessary, and Mandrake 10, I don't remember which it is, but you could try the patch anyway.

There is also one more important detail I overlooked as well. Make absolutely certain that you install the kernel-source for your Mandrake OS using KMenu > System > Configuration > Packaging > Install Software, otherwise the patch will likely not work, I just found that out the hard way.

I just gave up with ATI. I think it was designed to only work with Microsoft. I just went back to my older NVidia card and am getting about the same frame rate that I got from my newer ATI card, and it's rock stable.

I just hope that some day that ATI realizes that many people don't use Windows, and don't want to put up with substandard video drivers for Linux.

MJM70, If you wish, I could walk you through the process of making your graphics card work. Just today I was able to install Doom 3 on my system, under Linux. Man! It runs so smooth it's unbelievable! Anyway if you have MSN Messenger or any other IM program, I can contact you on there if you wish. My MSN contact is paull2k1@yahoo.com

WoW just Tried This

Just installed ATI drivers for my Abit ATI Radeon R9550 128mb.
And the fonts are clearer, the colors richer and videos play sharpper too.
Thanks
paull2k1

Ps: How can I test 3D .....Install Doom ?

paull2k1 07-19-2005 06:27 PM

Well, as an initial test, I ran tuxracer, which can be found here for Mandrake 10.0 and up: ftp://mirror.switch.ch/mirror/mandra...15mdk.i586.rpm that's usually a pretty good test to see if things are working as they should. Also from Konsole, you might want to consider typing fglrxinfo and see what it tells you. Don't forget to do su, then login with the root password. Don't jump the gun by installing Doom 3 until you're certain it works.

mjm70 07-19-2005 07:36 PM

Paul. Thanks for the offer. I will take you up on it once I get my home office back into order. I have re-installed my ATI card into the computer, and am willing to give it another try. The card should be far better than my old Nvidia T4200. I am looking forward to getting the graphics that I should be getting working.

I am still getting funny looks from several of my friends when I tell them that I am a linux convert. it's as if they think that I have crossed over to that dark side. (when we all know it's just that I have seen the light)

For my ATI 9800 AIW card and LE2005 distro, I just visit ATI website and download 35MB driver and run it. This driver is for most Raedon card I think.

Follow instruction on their website using custom installation. Since I know that I use Xorg, I just select the last option which is xorg driver in custom installation.

I didn't have to go into init 3 in order to install the driver or apply any patches.

All I did was install the kernel source packages and make a link. Once I have done installation I run $ glxgears. Here is my result:

20330 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4066.000 FPS
20157 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4031.400 FPS
20387 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4077.400 FPS
20189 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4037.800 FPS
20303 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4060.600 FPS
19113 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3822.600 FPS
19508 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3901.600 FPS
Broken pipe

If you want your card working properly in LE2005, visit ATI website and read through instructions on how to install it. Most of the guides on the net are obsolete. Probably, they just for 10.1

PS. If you have Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer, installtion of ATI driver most likely screws up your mouse configuration. So save a section of your mouse in xorg.conf just in case.

Dear ' paull2k1 ' ,

i read all the thread posted by you.

Well, dear, i have the same problem about my ATI Graphics.

i tell you , i have

AMD 64 BIT 939 3000+ Pprocessor
MSI Motherboard with Graphics ' ATI Radeon XPRESS 200 Series "
17" Philpis Monitor with 1280 X 1024 Resolution Maximum.
problem is linux does not install ATI Graphics Card , but some " VESA FRAMEBUFFER " card is installed ,

With VESA, my monitor is limited to 1024 X 768 Resolution. and System gives very faded and blurry look on only 65000 Colors.

Please HELP me all the way, i am really so disappointed because i can not live without SuSE linux.

I fear i will lost faith in Linux for ever.

I had to spend 40000/- BUCKS ( In India Money ) for my system.

Please HELP

I will highly thankful to you , all all the people associated to this forum.

Regards.

Someone please put me outta my misery!!
im using mandrake 10.1 and i have ati radeon 9800xl graphics card
i downloaded 'ati-driver-installer-8.14.13.run' and 'fglrx_6_8_0-8.14.13-1.i386.rpm'

and i also downloaded countless other files mentioned in any document that contains the word 'linux' and 'ati' none of which i have been able to work propperly.

ati-driver-installer-8.14.13.run will decompress...etc but then it abruptly exits and theres no screen that pops up telling me to install or anything just like on the ati website. it shows no errors either.

also im trying to get multiple monitors working, and the ati linux driver documentation doesnt seem to mention this at all, im wondering if this will be possible after i get my graphics card working? I have already tried to modify the 'XF86Config' file according to other peoples suggestions on this website however this still did not work.

On a side note my system is very slow if i play any mp3s in amarok. The system gets so slow it just freezes, however the same cannot be said for dvds which play no problem! very confusing altogether.

i have added you to my msn contacts, paull2k1, i hope you dont mind :D hopefully if you have a minute to spare next time your online you might be able to help me with this, otherwise ill await your reply here, thanks.
