Applications from Source

On mandrake 9.1 there is a list of apps that are recognised by the os (i.e you can use run command to launch them), these being mainly the ones supplied with the distro, or more advanced apps such as kylix, e.t.c.

Is there any way to add to this list applications that you have installed manually from source? I have got the hang of shell scripts so I can run them from icons but it is a pain with xine as I cannot yet open a file by clicking on it, rather I have to open it from within xine.

If you want to open xine with you click an mpeg, then you need to edit your window manager's mime settings.

If you want an icon for xine, you should be able to make a simlink in ~/.gnome/desktop or somesuch...

Sorry for being a useless noob but could you explain a bit more about simlinks? Also I should have mentioned that I'm running KDE3.
