AOL or other ISP on Mandrake 9.1

Hi Everybody,

Can AOL (or other ISPs) can be configured for Internet on Mandrake 9.1? If yes, pls. detail the procedure.

Thanks in advance,

I think that you'll have to be a little more specific.

i.e. what it is that you can't configure.

AOL, as far as i'm aware doesn't work with all the "bells and whistles" that come on one of their disc's, but as for just configuring net access, it depends on whether you are using a dial up connection, broadband (with a modem etc) or a network of some type.

John,

I will be using dial-up to access internet. I already have an account with AOL. But if other ISPs can work on Linux, I can signup for any one of them.

The only program currently available to access AOL's proprietary network is penggy. Penggy can be downloaded from "www.peng.apinc.org/". Installation and configuration instructions should be included. (I would provide them myself, but haven't used it since I went to broadband).

You'll find that any ISP can run on linux - this thing that worries people about "not supporting linux" is just that if you had problems, they will only answer questions about windows based stuff. Don't forget, the basic's of the net are "TCP/IP" and html. They just pass it through and your system reads it. I would think that you will need something like "KPPP" as the dialer - but I'm the same as evilpants, with a broadband connection.

Don't know about evilpants suggestion of penggy. Personally I don't like AOL (IMO, a bunch of over aggressive "media nazis").

But if you have the basic access info for you AOL account i.e. the dial up number and other stuff, then you should (in theory) be able to connect. The only thing that may cause a problem could be e-mail, I seem to recall something about AOL not using standard protocols - don't know how linux manages (if at all) with that. Does this matter? Hell, if you don't use any of their "content", then ditch them and sign up with someone local/cheaper!

Hello,

Before I invested in broadband I used earthlink. Setup was painless just some DNS settings and user and password and I was on my way. Now for me the dialup on linux seemed really slow, but it did work. Earthlink always has a special and when you talk to them and try to act like you know what your talking about because they know nothing about linux. What I did was just ask them if the had any dns settings and act like I had a windows box. KPP is really easy to set up and was painless to get running. If you have aol then you are paying about 23 dollars a month and cable internet is awsome and if you have cable and they offer it and you can efford a couple more dollars I would go for it.

Hope I was a help!

hi I see people that are using aol broadband can you tell me how u set that up please?

bigjohn 12-26-2003 09:22 PM

If you check the earlier postings BlackDragon, you'll see that we ARE using broadband, but NOT aol.

I'm in the UK and my service is the BT broadband wholesale product as provided by my supplier PIPEX.

I suspect that you might not be able to get aol broadband too work - there "stuff" is all windows based.

I use roggers and didn't have to configure anything. At the installation of MDK 9.2 I selected connection broadband and that's it. Then it automatically checked for any new updates and updated the version of MDK and i'm ready to go. Plug in the cable and I'm on the internet.
