I want to run Mandrake mainly because they claim that you can run OS9 or OSX within Mandrake at full speed as if it was the only OS running. So has anyone actually tried?

Never tried with Mandrake only Debian. Does not matter the distro.
I think you are talking about Mac-on-Linux (mol). I almost never boot OS X natively.
Note: mol runs OS X in user-mode. This means that even if it runs directly on the CPU, for apps that requires fast hardware access (like games) will be slow because OS X does not access hardware directly.
Useful, can set up networking between both OSes, use ssh and use NFS between them.
