anti-virus crashes pc

I am running LM 10.1 Official and in general it is rok solid, however, all os a sudden it crashes when the antivirus software is run. A complete crash - mouse, keyboard, network, etc. completely dead! It was working fine for months and then this started. I was using f-prot antivirus. I have also tried bitdefender for linux with the same result. The machine is a file server for my school. There is nothing in the logs.
Any ideas out there?

If crash means the computer hangs and doesn't respond, you should start the antivirus on a terminal, put the terminal on the front to see the message it gives when it hangs.

If you can't see the screen after a crash then ...... well, I never needed anti-virus on Linux anyway =)
