AMD64 zv5000 notebook graphic display configuration

Hi,

I just got the hp Pavilion zv5000 laptop with the 64 bit amd athlon and brightview widescreen 1680X1050 display. I wanted to install Mandrake 10.1. However, it apparently didn't detect the graphics card, or the monitor. When I tested the monitor during installation and clicked on yes when asked whether it was the correct display setting, the monitor started to flicker and everything was chaotic. After I rebooted, only text mode was working. I tried drakconfig, but still couldn't find the right display settings and monitor type, because the display became a mess again when I accepted the settings.

It would be extremely great if someone could explain to me how to fix the graphic display problem(it works very well in XP), or maybe suggest a different linux type.

Thank's!

by text mode do you mean you only have console available and not the X windowing system?
im thinking your display settings in XFree or XOrg ( what ever you are using) are bad

do this if i am somewhat correct...at command type startx. it will either start and give bad settings, or not start and give you an error message. if it gives u an error message you need to look at your config file (/etc/x11/xorg.conf) and see whats goin on w/ display
if its garbled and nasty look at the config file and maybe change the resolution or refresh rate and that possibly will put you on course
glad to help

I don't use Mandrake, so I cannot tell you the exact settings, but on my SuSE it worked as follows. Pass the following options to the nvidia module:

NVreg_SoftEDIDs=0 NVreg_Mobile=0

In SuSE 9.1 this can be done by adding the following line into the file /etc/modprobe.conf.local:

options nvidia NVreg_SoftEDIDs=0 NVreg_Mobile=0

Explanation: EDID stands for Extended Display Identification Data, which means that the driver can read information about the monitor directly from its DDC (Data Display Channel). This is a device between the monitor and the video card itself. Coincidentally, the LCD monitors used by HP for the Pavilion zv5000 seem to provide an EDID that is not properly understood by the graphics driver.

Hope this helps.

Hi

I managed to fix the problem back in January from when my question dates. I probably should have added the answer after fixing my problem. Thank's anyway.
