man, this is annoying me. Ok, here goes...i just installed linux mandrake 10.1 for AMD64. All goes well. I set it all up. Well, when it asked me to setup the monitor resolution and stuff, i did it. I set it to 1280x1024 at 70Hz. That is what i always run it at in windows. Now, it goes to the linux prompt for a login and password. i login. And it just blinks at me. I remember from a while ago, i had to type "kde" into the prompt to start KDE. Well, no luck. It tries and gives me some text saying that 'xorg' cannot find any devices. Well, it knew my video card (6800 gt) in the install. Did i mess up stuff when i changed the screen resolution in the install process? If i did, how can i change it back...and remember, i am VERY NEW at linux. I need step by step plz. Or, would it be faster/easier to jsut reinstall linux and not touch the resolution stuff?

actually, i think it would be easiest to just do a re-install. it would be easier than saying 'go to this file, change thisthisandthat, add this line to another file, etc...
once everything is working, then you can play around with your resolution settings. also, you might have to download the appropriate driver(s) for your video card (try the video card's maker's website), especially if you're using the download edition of 10.1

A re-install of the system is overkill.

At WORST you can rpm -e any driver files, i.e. NVIDIA-xxx which will also automatically pinpoint any changed files that RPM cannot remove...

However all you really should have to do is

1) Switch to the text console with [CTRL][ALT][F1] and log in as root.

2) Shut down the display manager

service dm stop

3) Try running Xwindows directly via

startx

if it runs this way you may have a rights issue or problem with the DM service.

I'd

urpmi kdm

at this point to also add the KDE manager...

Then check the rights on all associated files for both kdm and mdkkdm

4) If X refuses to run via STARTX

get out [CTRL][ALT][BACKSPACE]

and as root run

XFDrake

and try to reconfigure your displays.

Finally did you install the proper kernel modules from the /drivers directory on the CD's?

e.g

cd /mnt/cdrom/drivers

urpmi nvidia-kernel-2.x.x-xmdk

etc.

You can try the video setup program again. It is called XFdrake. You need to su to root to run it. I think its located in '/usr/sbin/' or '/sbin'.

There are two possible problems. One is the video driver, and second the monitor settings.

There is a video driver that works with nearly every video card called 'vesa'. If you choose this driver, then you can work on the monitor selection, and solve one possible problem at a time.

Without more information, such as the driver selected in the XF86config file and the monitor you selected, I don't think much else can be said yet to help.

totally appreciate the responses. i will do those now. The monitor is fine. I chose the exact model from the install setup. Its a KDS VS-19. It can handle up to 1600x1200 at 75Hz. I am running below that. I tried all the wya down to 800x600 in the setup program and it said "Device nto Detected". I will do what you guys said. thx for help. Hope this works!!!


P.S. All i get to is the prompt. i get no GUI at all!!

I love you man!!! The vesa worked. I am now in the GUI and can now download the new drivers via nvidia!!! Thx!!! I also tried the other stuff, but nothing worked...the vesa did!!!
