Red face Add an user in Mandrake 9

Dear all,

I find that there are several ways of adding users in KDE viz. userconf, kuser and the command useradd. Which one works how. I found that ading user creates a group with same name. But, the uid of the user & group is different in kuser and userconf.
This has been a worry as none of the programs created the Documents and Desktop file. Only tmp file was created in home directory.

Thank.

Adding a user by using Userdrake does create a home directory etc.

Adding to carlywarly's post,
you should use the useradd command or UserDrake (GUI tool).

Hi,

I used userdrake to create a new user. The name shows in Mandrake 9 login screen. However, when I select the name in GUI login and try to login, login fails. I tried all window managers like KDE, GNOME,etc.
I log in with another username (created at installation time). I checked that user directory. No "Desktop" or "Documents" file was there. I guess these files are auto generated after GUI login.
Where am I going wrong? Its so easy in Windows XP.

Thanx in advance.

Hi there,

My problem has not yet solved. Userdrake did not help and there was no Documents file in /home/newuser/. Only file was /home/newuser/tmp. Some hidden files are also created. But I have no idea on what these files are for.

My newuser name appears in GUI login screen. But login is failing. Any workaround for this. I tried deleting the user and creating the new one in Userdrake. I checked this from Linuxconf (GUI user management module). Everything seems fine.

Pls help.

Thanx in advance.

Do you want to bypass the GUI logon screen and still log on to a graphical environment, or do you want to log on to a terminal session?

hi fallguy,

show me how to do both, i have read about kdm, gdm, startx and startkde commands, not sure about their differences and when to use what command

i guess if i login to terminal i can use these commands to start gui session

but my major problem is about adding new user, i don't know why it shows up in gui login screen but login still fails

thanx

Did you install all the updates after installation? It may well be a bug in Userdrake.

I believe I know...
While adding a new user, at any point, were you ask to enter a password ?

Try re-setting the password manually from the command line. As root, type:
Code:
passwd username
Also, to add a user from the comand line, use the following syntax:
Code:
useradd -m username
passwd username
