How do I add a desktop environment to the Mandrake 10.1 login screen (and the control center)?

Do the following (for gdm):

Copy and modify an entry in /etc/X11/wmsession.d/
Do the same with an entry in /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions/
Restart dm

All of the above is done automatically for you when you install the new manager via urpmi.

While the advice he gave works, I'd avoid doing it, only because it may "break" future installs of additional managers via URPMI.

Using urpmi is so much easier ! I've installed blackbox and Enlightenment that way.

Yes, urpmi is the recommended method, but not always feasible. Such as adding an environment that isn't available through urpmi. For example I have compile and installed KDE 3.4 beta in my ~ directory. Now it's very easy to add an entry for gdm as stated above. And as far as I can tell urpmi should have no problems with adding other environments after you have done this.
