acpi_power_off not working with kernel 2.6

This is my first post...

I recently installed Mandrake 10.1 on my new Sony S170 (w/ Radeon 9700). Several problems were solved (ipw2200, throttling, hibernate, no sound) when I installed a different kernel:

kernel-multimedia-2.6.7-1.mm.6mdk-1-1mdk

The problem I'm trying to solve now is acpi_power_off (sleep state S5, soft off, echo 5 > /proc/acpi/sleep) doesn't do anything (after shutdown or a hibernate). I goggled it a bit and found that noapic and nolapic on bootup should make it work, but unfortunately, nolapic freezes right after the grub menu. Should I change apic=on?

While on the topic, I'm also having a few other problems related to ACPI: 2) Sleep states S1/S3 immediately wakeup without a keyboard/mouse event, but they do try to suspend, 3) ipw2200 doesn't come out of hibernate - I have to ifdown/rmmod/modprobe/ifup.

Other problems I'm having include these: 4) slow/software 3-d graphics (using fglx driver), 5) function keys and special S1/S1 buttons for volume/mute/brightness/etc, and 6) bluetooth (ALPS UGX).

Right now I'm mainly concerned about the ACPI stuff (mainly turning power off), but insight into any of the other issues I'm having would be appreciated.

Eric

i'm not sure if you're making grammatical errors or if you're confused (no offense).

you are talking about 2 different things in your post..........

ACPI is Advanced Configuration and Power Interface. APIC is nothing i know of. if you're using the apic=on command in grub, change it to acpi=on (or off, or ht, whichever suits your needs). this is not all to be confused with some BIOS settings that refer to APCI which mean Advanced Power Control Interupts & has nothing to do with ACPI in Linux.

Try a google on these 3 terms and you'll find what I'm talking about: acpi_power_off hangs 2.6 . Do you know how the apic boot switches relate to the CONFIG_*APIC* compile variables? What does "ht" mean? I just downloaded the mandrake kernel 2.6.8.1-10mdk and am going to try a recompile by carefully choosing my options.

Here's an update on the issues I was having:

1) solved: got S5 ACPI power off to work by turning off local apic in a kernel compile - at bootup didn't work.

2) unsolved: S1/S3 sleep states still don't work with latest ACPI patch. Other Vaio owners seem to be in the same boat.

3) unsolved: patched kernel (many hand edits needed) to install swsuspend2, but it doesn't work. It should have more control such that I could possibly force a restart on ipw2200 and maybe solve radeon fglrx resume locking up. Unfortunately I haven't got it to work yet. It freezes as soon as I run hibernate at run level 3 (console only). Need more investigation.

4) partially solved: Install fglrx from ATI and it seems to be getting decent speeds now - but not great. But the new problem is that when I switching virtual terminals to X (or from one virtual X terminal to another) it sometime freezes up and resume from a suspend-to-disk (S5) always locks up.

5) partially solved: got sonpi module working by compiling it into the kernel (module didn't work). It recognizes all Fn function keys but treats both S1 and S2 buttons as S1. Still need to put in the right scripts to do something with these keys/buttons.

6) unsolved: haven't investigated bluetooth enough yet.

7) solved: got advanced touchpad features working by applying the alps.patch to the kernel, installing synaptics, and putting in the right XF86Config entries for the touchpad and the external mouse.

This is a LOT of work!
