8139 ethernet not working

Hello!
I'm completly new to linux and I have a major problem: i cannot connect to the internet.
I bought a d-link dfe530tx+ which is supposedly supprted by linux and the 8139too driver. So basically, I used the automated scripts (i.e.the mandrake control center) to set up my card. there seem to be two problems: one is when i try to create a new connection and manually select the drivers, I am looped back to the page where it asks me if i want to manually select or use the "dfe 538 tx" In other words, it wont let me manually slect the proper module. No matter, though, as in HardDrake, the ethernet card has the 8139 moodule slected and maybe loaded. However, when i do anyhting to connect to the internet, nothing works. I know it's not a hardware problem and I suspect I'm missing something basic. In any case, any helpp wpuld be appreciated!
Thanks,
Tomas Novickas

8139 notworking

in a terminal beocme su and then ifconfig, is the card listed as UP ? Do a lsmod and see if 8139too is loaded. Whoa forgot, the 8139 also should load another module besides 8139too there should be mil or is it mii loaded as well. I show the 8139too as loaded but not being used while right below that is mii which is. All I know is that it takes both for the realtech chipset to work.

when i do ifconfig, there is nnothign to tell me that eth0 is up however when i do ifconfig up, i get a message "up: error fetching interface information: Device not found"lsmod is lik yours: there is a mii module that is related to the 8139too and it is being used once.

8139 issues

Ok when you do ifdonfig what are you getting? does it show eth0? Does it have an IP? If you go into the hardware manager and locate the rtl8139 what does it show? What are you trying to do with the card, connect via ethernet to dsl. or cable? Let me re-read your question and see what I can think of.

note that the dlink530 driver and the dlink538 drivers use different drivers. The 530 requires the via-rhine driver and the 538 requires the (Realtek) 8139too driver.

samot, I recently had Man 10 CE on a machine with the DLink 530 tx... It has been a few weeks and I do not have Man 10 on it now, but I believe that I did not have to load any drivers to get the etho to work... Go to this link post # 21: Cable modems DO NOT use PPOE This configuration worked for my DLink connection...
