I just upgraded from 2009.1 to 2010 free. Everything works fine - EXCEPT: ninety five percent of the desk top is black. The other portion shows my chosen background and app icons, this is at the very top of the screen. I've tried the graphics settings and it made no difference.
I'm lost on this one, other than I can say the same thing happened on my 32bit desktop. A hard shutdown and restart has completely resolved the issue. I have tried the same thing on my laptop without success. 2009.1 performed without issue on this computer.

I included a screen shot to help. I hope someone can help with this!:-)
In the interest of making sure this is not a simple fix, have you tried ALT+Clocking the desktop, then selecting Desktop Settings. Check that the Wallpaper type is image, and that an image is selected. You can customize your desktop appearance using this dialog.
If your trouble is not resolved using this dialog, please post back with the manufacturer of your video adapter (ATI, nVidia, etc.).
First and foremost thank you for responding. I didn't think that anyone would have any idea!
In regard to your suggestions neither worked; evidently to simple. :-) When I make image changes on the 'mini desktop' I can see they are working. The darkened area is still no mans land; nothing works there.

Sometimes after upgrading KDE4.2.x to KDE4.3.x you may find that most of the desktop wallpaper is black except for a very small part at the top, see this screenshot: https://bzattachment.mandriva.com/at...t.cgi?id=15113
There're reports that this goes away after logging out then logging back in, as the plasma configuration files get touched.
If it persists then this will definitely fix it. Run these commands as user (not root) in terminal:
