2009.1 dvd not recognized, cd OK.

Howdy folks,

I have been fighting with installing 2009.1 and I think my last issue is the cdrom/dvd drive. The dvd is not detected, the entry for fstab is

/dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto umask=0,users,iocharset=utf8,noauto,ro,exec 0 0

Even under the hardware section of configuring the computer only the cdrom is listed. However I installed from the dvd and if I put a dvd in it, it lists the title but won't play it because it can't find the path to the dvd drive.

I also had a bear of a time with the X crashing about 10 seconds after the gui was up. I reinstalled 3 or 4 times, it might have been missing updates. I had 2008 and it worked perfect.

later dudes and dudettes!

Oh well, no answer. I think maybe the drive is too old, its a Philips SPD2513P.

DVD drives are usually detected in /dev as something like scd0 or scd1, can you find these device file in there? These files are also usually symlinked to their usual names like cdrom, cdwritter, dvd or dvdrw. Look for these in your /dev and then point your DVD player at that device.

Video DVDs are not mounted, so the fstab & mount points are not an issue here.

I looked in /dev and there are a bunch of stuff for dvd there. So maybe its just none of my players work, which is my other thread. thanks....

OK, I'm a mess...None of the players will play dvd's. Dragon, movie player or smplayer.
I normally use smplayer, I have /dev/dvd selected. I also installed the codec pack and libdvdcss. I ran it from a terminal to look for errors and really didn't see anything that stands out. The player starts, the FBI warning flashes on the screen for maybe 1/2 a second and its done.

My mind is OK, just very very late updates.

Unfortunately the Mplayer in the Mandriva official repos are not compiled to enable playback of encrypted DVDs. Installing libdvdcss alone does not help. You'll need to be running the Mplayer from PLF.

Go here: http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/
Click on "Add PLF Medias"

After this, look for Mplayer & SMplayer, there will be an updated version from PLF. Install that along with all it's dependencies. You could also try installing Kaffeine from PLF if SMplayer still doesn't work.
