2007 free: It only installs IceWM... I can't do anything with this.
The installation goes good and fast. However, it still installs things i don't tell it to, and does not install things i tell it to. I tell it not to install IceWM, and to install only KDE and GNOME for desktop environments, but for some reason it doesn't--and i can't work with IceWM, literally. I can't access any programs though i told the installation to install those things as well. Not sure what i can do to fix this.
What CD/DVD do you have? The Free "mini" cd only has IceWM and very few applications. You can install everything else by setting up media sources and downloading what you want.
Or you can download one of the ONE live CD's or the Free DVD and use that to install Mandriva.
I have the "mini." I can't really download the DVD one, for i do not have a DVD burner on this computer, nor have i seen Mandriva offer to ship CD's like Canonical does. The "mini" one should not give you the option to install these things if it cannot do so. I guess i'll figure out something... Thanks for your time.
If only that were possible for me. You see, when i said, "i can't work with IceWM, literally," i mean there's nothing to work with: No programs, no terminal, no anything besides the desktop environment and the wallpaper. The shutdown and log out buttons don't even work! I had to force shutdown by holding the power button on the computer. Although i tell the installer to install things—it doesn't.
And if i remember correctly, i've tried that "urpmi" command before, and it returned "no such command," or similar.

Hi, I think the distro you have is meant for another purpose.
But some of the tools should still be there. Try...
ctrl+alt+F2 to get to a free terminal (console/prompt)
Login and then type "rpm -ivh urpmi" (without the quotes) that should install verbosely with hashes (to display progress) the package for urpmi. ( any dependent packages will be required )
Then, you might need a good browser, type "rpm -ivh mozilla-firefox" to get fire fox. (fingers-crossed_it may be on the cd.) If it's not available post back here.
now you should be able to setup urpmi, follow the directions above.
Just to make sure there has been no misunderstanding or that no possible point has been missed, when you tried to run urpmi, were you logged in as the root user? Any time you install software system wide, you must be logged in as the root user. This includes using urpmi, rpm, or any of the GUI software installers.

No, i wasn't logged in as root. I thought it would be similar to Kubuntu. But what was interesting the most was that the terminal and logging off and shutting down worked when i ran Mandriva free 2007 through VMWare, but not when i installed it literally on my comp.
