2006 x86_64

Anywhere I can download an iso for 2006 x86_64 to try Mandrake out again.

Need to find if LAMP and Wireless are working yet on x86_64 and want a free download to test.

Looking to test for wireless driver that work with ndiswrapper or native drivers on the x86_64 2006 version. (Not with the Linuxant $20 drivers please, which I know do work with Fed 4 and Suse x 86_64 now.)

Better still if someone can also say they have all this on a laptop with x86_64 code like amd64.

Mandriva 2006 isos are not officially out yet for the general public but you can do a network installation from an http or ftp source.

dolphans1 10-26-2005 07:20 PM

I am downloading as we speak, off Mandriva Club site the ISO DVD version.

Yes but you have to join the club.

Fedora4 and Susu 10 are free.

It seems Mandrake is trying to charge for the 64 bit version now.

Never tried Fedora or Suse,

Mandriva is free to charge for its distros. You only have to join the club if you want early access to isos and other extras. You can download 2005LE for free and 2006 isos will be available sometime soon (and they will be free as well).

100 Euro's to join the club, so hence the cost for the distro that cannot be tested yet on the x86_64 platform.

The 2005LE may be free but is dated now at least 8 month out of date. It also does not work with apache php on the x86_64 version.

Whereas, Suse 10 and Fedora 4 x86_64 versions work with LAMP now and are much ahead of the LE2005, and they are free.

I do not think Mandrivel is doing itself a favour with it's join the club for a 100 dollars and you can get the x86_64, especially since there is no way to test if it will work.

At least with SuSE and Fedora you can test the x86_64 code before you go and buy if you wish. Since, SuSE costs about 50 dollars it is a
much better deal than joining the Mandrake club and you get the handbooks as well.

I don't think you fully understood what I meant. The isos for 2006 will be released to the general public soon. If you are a club member you get early access to the isos, access to Mandriva Expert, their knowledge base (documentation) as well as access to technology preview releases every 2 months (with the latest KDE and GNOME etc) and other perks. With all those perks you are not just paying for a one of distro but for services as well. If you buy the boxed sets, you get printed material as well, just like in Suse. If you are not willing to part with your money or don't want the extras that a club membership provides, download the isos of Mandriva Free when they are released and then you can try them out on your hardware.

Suse has just started releasing free isos as soon as they release the official version, so you also don't have to pay for it. If you choose to pay for it, you can also end up spending more than a hundred euros a year because they have six monthly release cycles.

Yes but it's so dated by then isn't it.

Surely, it's better to get Fedora 4 free and Suse 10 free for x86_64 for free, see it is really free, the point it is free for x86_64.

ney Ney it really is free, you don't have to wait for an edition that is so old for x86_64 that you are using the other distro's why go back.

I think maybe you are being obtuse, I am talking about x86_64 distro's and having worked for a long time without being a member of the club helped perhaps in my own small way to help Mandrake. When they turned it into mandrivel maybe they lost the plot.

I repeat a $100 for an untried and untested version of Man* when you can get leading edge distro's -now ahead of Mandrake- for free and buy boxed and manual set for $50 is a better bargain.

I have had the 2005 for 9 months now and it is really, really dated.

Forcing users to get to join a club to get a copy of the latest distro, does not stack up.

I also notice that they didn't even bother to have a stand at the Linux exhibition this year at Olympia London two weeks ago.

Fedora, Redhat and Susu did. Have you to join the club to find the x86_64 software doesn't work?

:tisk:   :D :o

You still don't get me and we seem to be going round in circles. Nobody is forced to join the club, you only join the club if you want the perks from Mandriva and thats how they make money to pay developers as well as providing boxed sets etc. If you don't want to join the club the you can do a network installation or wait for the free isos which are usually released a few weeks after the club members have recieved them. You can download them for free without paying anything to Mandriva, so you are not not being forced to pay $100 for an untried distro.

As for being dated, you can't compared Mandriva 2006 with Fedora Core because Fedora Core was released months ago so its packages are dated when compared to Mandriva. Even though Suse and Mandriva were released in the same month, their package versions are different so again, there is no point in comparing them. As for 2005 being dated, of course it is, it was released a while ago so what do you expect. As for not having a stand at the Linux Expo, were all distros represented there?

It seems to me you don't like Mandriva or its business model, but they also have to make money to pay developers. To me the Club is a good way of doing this. At first I was a bit dubious about it, but Mandrake went into bankruptcy protection a few years ago because most people were downloading their distro for free without giving something back. They used to release free isos even before their boxed sets were available, but were forced to change this policy because they needed to raise money to stay afloat.

Personally I think Suse is getting better at a faster rate than any other Linux distro but also think you are not being very objective when you are looking at Mandrivas business model and making a mountain out of a mole hill regarding the isos because you are still going to be able to get them for free (some time next week if my info is correct) and test them on your x86_64 machine.

barrythai 10-27-2005 08:06 PM

No you are not correct.

The iso's for the x86_64 are not released. You can only work with the beta and rc1's.

Hence you are FORCED to join a club, that offers what?

Mandrake used to have the best leading edge distro, but now with Mandrivel it is failing it's devotees, who are forced to go to SuSE and fedora.

At least Fedora works with x86_64 with full LAMP where Mandrake does not as far as I am concerned.

I have tried the so called network installation, which isn't to my mind open source as, it is restricted by the access and permissions of mandrakes servers. The last time I used it only the bare bones of the operating system was available. The major programs were not available.

In any case a network connection means just that, hardly useful for anyone, who doesn't have a network, or does not have an operating system that can connect.

In any event a network download is as restrictive as a one machine only license. Hardly useful for those who want to share the power of Linux with those who might be tempted to leave the blue screen of death software.

purelithium 10-27-2005 11:25 PM

The ISOs that the club has now, will be released in about 2-3 weeks.

How is that "dated" it's not like Fedora or SuSE releases a new version every 2-3 weeks (i'm not talking about testing or CVS)

You keep ignoring the major argument against you.

charlescpc 10-28-2005 02:34 AM

There are several good distros. If you don't like Mandriva then use something else. It's that simple. Don't go to the forum ragging on the distro cause you don't like it.

I personally like Mandriva the best so far. I'm anxiously awaiting the free download of 2006. I have tried Mephis and Ubunto and Suse but I like Mandriva 2005le.

Like I said if you like Suse or Fedora better then don't come into the Mandriva forum and gripe about them. Use Suse or Fedora and go to their forum. They are good distros also. The good thing about Linux are there are so many distros to choose from.

You are obviously working on Mandrakes behalf.

I have the same rights as you in entering the Mandrake forum.

I love Mandrake but want it to do better.

You obviously do not as you are now blind to the differences that have happened over the last 6 months and how far Mandrake has fallen in the x86_64 arena.

You keep giving the mantra of a Mandrake salesman and completely miss the point. I'm talking about the x86_64 version where Mandrake has lost the plot.

I will still recommend Mandrake to everyone if they are beginners and want to change to a smooth easy operating system that is far the easiest to install, but only if they have 32 bit machines.

Why don't you see for yourself, oh sorry your a member of the Mandrake club, so you have joined the fold. Take pity on all those who cannot afford to waste money for the so called benefits of the Mandrake club.

Normally I would just ignore someone like this, but I have a few points to share before letting this rest. I am not sure whether to take barrythai seriously anymore, especially with the stuff thats in your last post. It seems like he/she is just intent on spreading FUD against Mandriva without getting his/her facts right. barrythai, you are being hard headed here and choosing to ignore what everyone else is telling you. All isos are being released for free soon (both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions), so there is NO NEED TO JOIN THE CLUB (as myself and others have been saying all along).

The network install contains all the packages that are available in the free Mandriva cds which will be available soon, so why would there be any major packages missing unless they are not free software. You are not at the mercy of Mandriva ftp/http servers because, you can choose a mirror and install from there.

If Fedora and Suse are a lot better, then go use them instead of misinforming people when you have not done any background research. Nobody here is a Mandriva salesman, but they are giving you accurate info which you can get yourself by visiting the Mandriva website.

barrythai 10-28-2005 05:57 AM

Your talking dribble I use all three.

Thank you for your comments and I will be pleased to see a release of the 2006 x86_64 iso so I can test it against the other two leaders.

Meanwhile I will still recommend Mandrake for newbies, but not serious users, that is until I can test the x86_64 under full LAMP and have resolved the x86_64 wireless problem with all distro's.

I will be the first to sing the praises of Mandrake if it can rectify it's Apache php problem under 10.2 and if it succeeds where all others have failed to have a working ndiswrapper on x86_64 or have cards that are not Linuxant that work without paying $20 dollars for a driver.

I also happen to use all three, so know what I am talking about (not talking dribble). I also happen to be a "serious Linux user" but still prefer to use Mandriva and Suse as my main Linux platforms because they are the two distros I know the most even thoguh I have a lot of experience with others. To be honest for someone who is experienced with Linux, any distro will work fine, but we all choose to align ourselves to certain distros because of personal preference and a host of other factors. I have said my piece and letting this rest because I don't want it to descend into an unnecessary slinging match.
