Hi There - anyone come across these problems in 2005 -
After my install of 2005 I have had a few odd things happen - firstly when I surf the net, if I enter a webpage that is possibly running a midi file, my sound card goes into a loop repeating the same note all the time. I can only shut off the sound by logging off locally. If I then log back in I have no sound.
This action of the soundcard also drops the broadband internet connection. I then have to shut down the box and start again Most times the internet connection will start again but not always.
I have tried going to the control center to see if I can turn the sound off, but cannot get into it as it hangs. I then have to restart the box again.
I have also found that a little hitch or error that I make will drop the broadband connection leaving me to restart the box again.
Any help would be appreciated on a possible solution for the above. Thanks

This sentence makes me suspect that you have a damaged system. A new install without formatting your user partition will tak 1/2 hour and might fix this. Hunting through to find damaged or deleted files could take months.
There was a report a couple of years ago, that ALSA and KDE did not play well together. For some obscure reason ALSA commandeered the system sound and would not let go. I may sound like a bit of an evangelist, but, so far in my maybe limited experience Mandriva 2006, gives the least setup headaches. My machine is an older Athlon at 1.6Gb\256Mb DDR\using onboard sound and video, all works fine on my standard install of 2006.Okay, one sound channel on my m\b is broken, big deal, it is a server, not a game machine or entertainer. The same install also works like a charm on my Acer 3000 laptop with SIS graphics, dual boots with XP OEM.
Give Mandriva 2006 a try.
