Hi,
I have just installed mandrake 10.1 on my computer.
I have a DELL dimension 4700, intel 4 530 processor 3GHz, 512 MB ram,graphic card ati radeon x300, monitor Dell E153FP.
I have two problems:
-I cannot get the graphic configuration to work, I tried all different combinations of resolution and different kind of monitors (plug and play, Dell E152FP since Dell E153FP is not in the default settings, and the personalised one) with the fglrx driver. When I do the test it always gives me a black screen and an error message "no device detected, try other settings"
-when I reboot the computer hangs after the message "Disabling IRQ#20" (before it also gives an error message with the eth0 configuration).
I would appreciate it if someone can help me out.

have you tried the generic Flatpanel 1280 ones


A dell does give you support too dont they?
they might be a bit better at this providing their normal enough to have an Actually IT person providing Tech support.

I wouldn't take it to dell (unless maybe if you bought linux installed from the factory) to solve the issues. If they find out you've loaded linux on the laptop that totally voids the warranty (I'm pretty sure)

don't worry about the /eth0 faliure. If you've added a network to it, then it expects to find the network, and if it doesn't then it doesn't care. (10.1 does the same thing with my printer becuase I don't have my printer plugged in when I'm mobile).

And another thing, try using google....it might help find everything else you need.

mine always fails on ETH0 check but still works even if i boot to runlevel 2


i was thinking more along email or call a dell over the phone technical support or something to ask whats different about the hardware. most companies give a little advice as to what you can do and what needs to be done.

I got the same monitor and Mandrake 10 but while X loads correctly It is impossible to change the screen resolution.

It is stuck to 640X480 and it is blurry, if I go higher I gotta scroll the desktop (very annoying) like if X and the monitor cannot synchronize their setting...

I check for e153fp specific driver and I also tried generic driver, but I got the same problem...

when your Desktop resolution is set higher then tthe the Screen resolution that happens

CTRL: +ALT + (numpad +)
and find one that fits the whiole screen
and or change your screen resolution higher or desktop lower

I'm trying to run the Mandrake 10.1 install on a Dell 4700 with the same specs and a Dell E173FP flatpanel and run into exactly the same problems.

(EE) No devices detected. for all monitor / graphics card configurations I can think of

and

eth0 never comes up.

Disabling networking and trying to connect (service network start) after linux is booted will give the same "Disabling IRQ#20" message which then stalls everything necessitating a reboot.

6foot, did you have any luck figuring out your problem?

Anybody else have any ideas?

Have you tried booting with the "noapic" option? Given the "Disabling IRQ#20" message, that *might* be part of the problem.

Thanks Padma, that was indeed the problem with the networking.

As for the monitor configuration, that was a little more challenging. The steps I followed were:
- downloading and installing the ATI radeon drivers from their website.
- running xf86config according to the specifications of the card and screens (nothing tricky here)
- discovering that the xf86config version I used writes an incorrect line:

BusID "PCI:1:0:1" # vendor=1002, device=5b70

which should in fact be:

BusID "PCI:1:0:0" # vendor=1002, device=5b70


That fixed everything.
