2.6.8 kernels don't load ext3 module on boot!
OK...upgraded the office machine from 9.2 to 10.1 tonight. All went well during the install, but on reboot, most of my partitions didn't get mounted...
mount: ext3 filesystem type not supported by kernel (or something similar)
When it finally gets to the runlevel 3 login prompt, I can log in as root and manually modprobe the ext3 module and mount -a, but of course none of the system services are running, etc.
I tried compiling a custom kernel (with ext3 hard-compiled in)....odd - after the new kernel was installed, it'd boot - and find all my partitions - but looked in the wrong directory (continued to look in /lib/modules/2.6.8.whatever instead of /lib/modules/2.6.8.whatever-custom) for its modules - therefore none were loaded. ?????
What's up? I've tried the 2.6.8.1-12 kernel which came with 10.1 and also the 2.6.8.1-24 updated Mandrake kernels. All three do the same thing (with or without the initrd). I really would appreciate it if someone could clue me in as to how to get the ext3 module loaded at boot. No, I don't want to mount them all as ext2 partitions.
I can boot the old 2.4.22 kernel (left over from 9.2) without any problems.
Thanks for any advice...Bob
