Time for tests: Mageia 3 beta 2 is available

Hi there

The release is finally done. Isos of beta2 are available on public mirrors:

http://blog.mageia.org/en/2013/01/25...beta-2-is-out/

Thanks for all the hard work. We are now in the last run. We need tests more than ever.

Enjoy!

Hi, I've been testing b2 for a few weeks now, (and kubuntu and mint and moondrake)

I think it's beautiful and everything just flows. Really nice install transition.

My only concerns are that, shorewall is started, but with the mcc sec gui the "allow all" checkbox is always selected after a reboot. That means I haven't had a fire wall, off and on for 2 weeks.... deep breath...

Maybe I got it wrong and I need to read some more...(?)

atm, I'm back using a script for launching iptables with squid.

Just now with mcc network, I'm getting eth0 swapping to eth1 when a new network adaptor is connected, turning this small net upsidedown.

This used to happen with mcc mandriva2009 (I think), Back then I fix the system by not using mcc to configure the networks, hosts and iptables.

I'm thinking of re-immplementing something like that now, as

I can give the commands after the system has booted to the gui, and the network/web is connected (gateway/firewall/proxy).

I have to check it out,... I'll get back to here when i get it.

I'm also working on getting steam and counterstrike source to run on our systems.
<edit> "STEAM WORKS!" with some added 32bit (i586) libs (i got some lists to diff, then I'll report back) </edit>
I'm looking at steams sh files and seeing 2 main differences.
".deb" say, i386 AMD64
".rpm" say i586 x86_64

That, and
the program names and
the relevant switches, and
the path differences, like /usr/lib and /usr/lib64 on rpm (x86_64) systems

Not tried this b4, still reading, Cheers And Thanks! Glenn

I meant to add that

I like the idea of "connecting" a network device to a HW add.

But because of the "swap" I mentioned before, it breaks the network.

Late last night I got the system to boot complete with squid and web access and 3d desktop.

So far, I have resorted to the xorg nv module, glxgears is a smooth 60fps with 3d desktop effects (wobbly windows, 6 sided cube). In my experience that's good.

I've documented a proceedure to circum navigate the mcc settings.

Most important/difficult, "installing the vesa driver" using the install program to dislodge the nouveau module (really difficult to uninstall imhe)

I'll try to install a newer nvidia beta today.

GlennsPref 03-05-2013 10:19 PM

It worked. (/usr/src/nvidia-313.26/)

Code:

glenn@GamesBox:~ glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh.  The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.720 FPS
301 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.024 FPS

I found a key component was not installed off the Mageia3b2-x86_64 dvd.

relating to my previous post about shorewall...
syslog... after installing syslog I realised a few things began to work...

mcc sec settings for shorewall now show "all on". Which is promising.

I need to learn the proper reporting/debugging but I rarely get started before I get into problems (usually nothing to do with reporting, mostly installing the debug packages and all-insundry).

I have not tried lately, but endevour to look at this again, and see If I cand find a click to help more.

The only scripts I have "I'm thinking of re-immplementing something like that now, as
" is one rsync restore list of backup configs. A bit of kdiff3 was used to get the best(?) setup.

Did I say I have steam running? wip

<edit>
when I mentioned the vesa driver, that was installed at the config page of the Mageia Installer dvd. That's how I avoided the nouveau module loading and having to get rid of it after. I removed dkms to remove the nv driver, and installed the latest nVidia beta (313.26)

I think installing dkms, and xorg's nv driver, dragged the deps in, that were stopping any compiling/building.

I'm also using addblock with squid, adding complexity to fault analysis.
</edit> cheers.

Hi, I haven't done the mga3b3 disk install yet, but, I will soon.

I'm uptodate with the Cauldron repos, as of the time of writing this post.

With or without shorewall
Quote:

using systems ckconfig iptables (with 81 rules) and shorewall, firewall gui shows "Everything, No Fire Wall".
I'm using a hacked example script for ip tables, initiated by rc.local(I anticipate the implementation of preloading an instance of iptables protection asap, I read somewhere).

relating to my previous post about shorewall...
Quote:

syslog... after installing syslog I realised a few things began to work...
correction, should have been rsyslog, as the mga3b3 wiki/errata says.

I have my system working as I expected, meaning...

near-latest kernel
nVidia beta graphics driver
FireWalled Gateway Proxy Desktop. With kwin effects as a basis.

All of this insucruity feeling is contributed by the shorewall gui saying it's OFF.

I did a web check with GRC.com's sheilds-up and came up "stealth" with or without a custom script init by me. weird...(?)

I'm looking forward to mga3. Loving kde4 and not too concerned with grub2 atm. (I've read the mga3b3 wiki and errata and release notes)

Pay no attention to "any detracktors" in posts (comparisons of forward pathway)

back on topic, I'm keeping notes of what works.

But I am only able to do this because of the
backups I have kept and
trial and error exerperimentation with notes.

The scripts I have are only lists of files to be restored after the first boot following install from dvd.

It's not an exhaustive list but helps me keep my system working.

Apache in cauldron seems to be broken...after ver. 2.4.4-1.mga3

httpd fails to start, and after exploring the suggestions given, I found the modules were all corrupted, linking to paths and modules that did not exist.

Code:

GRC.com reports full stealth and Upnp safe.

Squid working, see
/home/glenn/build/testing-network-2013-03-13-09.log

using systems ckconfig iptables (with 81 rules) and shorewall, firewall gui shows "Everything, No Fire Wall".

Squid launched from rc.local as with eth1.
No adzap or advanced cache managers and or redirects/filters.
