Mageia progression at Release 6
 

I'm going to be installing Mageia 6 this weeked and I learned that they have a new Package Manager 'DNF'and also that it does not have Firefox 56???

Any thoughts on the mandrake fork as to the direction they are heading?

I just checked my Mageia 6 install.

The Firefox is v. 52.x.x ESR.

dnf is installed, but the urpm? commands still work. (Thanks. I didn't know that dnf had been added to Mageia. I didn't read the release notes because why bother?)

I was dual booting with win 7 but will let Magiea 6 have the whole drive and let win 7
in virtualbox, its a bit of fluffing around but the only thing my family uses windows for
mostly is facebook games that need flash

I like Magiea but I still have one more box dual booting windows and MXLinux
its a debian based distro, I like it and will keep it that way

Magiea is a good distro, I've been with it since Mandrake 9 and then Mandriva
have had a look at quite a few other distros but still prefer Magiea
and the official support forums are very good with some heavy-duty knowledgeable support guys

For better or worse I'm biased towards Mageia. Mandriva really impressed me with Drake Tools, MCC and It was a RPM distro. I wish they would ditch SystemD but that's too much to ask. I would prefer that they did not become a re-branded version of Fedora and keep urpmi and every thing that gave Mandriva it's character. I liked Centos a lot (not buggy at all) but it was a pain to get Home desktop packages like AbiWord and a few games. I'm surprised that Mageia 6 does not come with Firefox 56 but maybe they just missed each others releases. I would like to add that I have been impressed with Firefox except for one version for the last 10 years. They have been doing a really good job in my opinion.

I have gotten quite fond of Mageia also. I'm surprised to realize that I've been running it on various machines since v. 3.

The only other distros I've used for so long are Debian (on that machine over there ---->) and Slackware--I've always had at least one Slackware box (I'm typing this in a Solus VM on Slackware --Current).

A number of the members of my LUG are old heads who started with Mandrake, and, although they are conversant with other distros, they've stuck with Mandrake and its descendants and are now happily running Mageia as their primary distro. We did have a diehard Slacker, more diehard than I, but he moved to Denver:).

As regards Firefox, I think the Mageia maintainers opted for the ESR version.

Well I installed Mageia 6 on a laptop today and I will NOT be updating 4 that is on my desktop at this point.Before I go into specifics I will state that it is very buggy. Kppp freezes and was difficult to kill when it worked fine the day before. AbbiWord's screen goes black if you take the cursor off of the window so it's basically useless. I tried to backdate it but ran into dependency hell. It needs a heap of updates including Firefox. The Elevated Privilege icon in the system tray stays on all the time. Error dialog boxes open but don't seem to poise a problem so you can just close them. Mandriva 9 was pretty bad but so far Mageia 6 looks like it will easily surpass it. I like trying to be more aligned with RedHat because of employment opportunities but WTF. A majority of the system programs are named Fedora this or that so I don't know why Mageia even puts their name on it. I hate to see the Mandrake fork be diminished and all the distro's look to have the same direction with RedHat's dominance after systemD's creation. I really think init has to come back and challenge systemD for open source to be protected.

On the bright side the boot loader installed fine and Mate is lessening the pain about how great Gnome2 was.RIP Gnome2.:) Mageia will probably bounce back with the next release though.
