Mageia 4 released
|
Just installed it.
I wonder if they ever test it by doing a clean install. The first 2 problem worked right up to the final release. Can't setup the printer. Cant share the internet. I reported the problem with the ypserver and again never fixed. I still hack it with every fresh install. urpmi won't use a local repositories. I reported this back in beta 1 and it never got fixed. So all the rpm's I got from other sites have to be loaded one by one now. |
I'm trying it at the moment. So far 4 is worse than 3. I ought to add that I'm using 32-bit (no 64-bit computer) and Xfce (I hate KDE and Gnome), so I'm breaking my own rule and not judging by the default.
The package manager wants to use the DVD for the core repo, and I seem to be missing the configuration tool to change that. No codecs are installed (why, in a European distro?) and the web site has nothing to say on the subject. Installing the gstreamer plugins still leaves me with four dead video players. Many of the drop-down menus show all text below the top as a blur: it's a case of "click to see what it is"! I think I shall persevere and see if I can beat it into submission: that took 2 days for SUSE, and this may be worse. |

have to agree
3 appears to be better than 4 had a few issues with the install although it finished Ok upgraded 1 comp with 3 to 4 have another 5 to do but will stick with 3 for now I sense that this version was rushed |
Well, I found drakconf — installed but not in the menu — so I could configure my software sources. But it's sound section doesn't recognise my usb speakers and the hardware section lists them as a usb device, but not as a sound device. Still, that's one up on Peppermint, whose installer identified the speakers as a keyboard and left me with no input!
Actually, I think the Mageia installer is great. But isn't it one of the old Mandrake things? |

Did you look for the MCC (Mageia Control Center)? This should be in the menu. It should give you access to all the gui config tools. |

Today I tried the Mate version and met a new, unique bug: invisible applets! Things like the notification area and the updater are on the panel, but invisible. |
Very interesting.
I have Mageia 3 on my loaner drive but have not had a chance to try 4. Sounds like it may be fun. Need to find some time for it. Maybe they could follow the Ubuntu lead and declare these things to be features not bugs. |
