How long will we wait for Firefox 26

Hey out there;

I saw that Fireox 26 is ready to be downloaded. I was wondering a couple things; can I download it an install it on my Mageia using 'urpmi' or am I going to have to wait until the Mageia Community decides to upgrade Firefox.

I presently have "Firefox ESR version 24.1.1" . Am I far off to think I am going to be using this versikon of Firefox for a LOOOONNNNGGG time and I may as well forget about installing a newer version or is their hope?

Not sure where you got your information but I just went to the Mozilla site to check and was told
Quote:

Congrats! You’re using the latest version of Firefox.
I am running 24.

I got that from;
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/

If you went to this page
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/26.0/releasenotes/

and you went to the bottom of the page you can see there is one major bug left to fix. Sounds like a beta or mayber a RC to me.

Going through their links about system requirements and so forth I clicked on number 2 "install" and it took me straight to the same page that congratulated me for being up to date.

I do see a bunch of hits in my search engine saying it has been released. Never believe bloggers. They all read each others works and then copy them.

When it is released and been looked over by the fine Mageia package maintainers it may not be available for Mageia 3 but you could probably get it in Mageia 4. Don't know if they backport or not.

Most Linux distros with a Stable release do not like to upgrade packages to that release. They prefer to use security upgrades to the package to make it safe to continue to use.

It probably would be necessary to upgrade your Mageia version to get the newer package when it hits the repo.

Checking with a search for Mageia 4 I see the RC (release candidate) is due 1-6-14. Not sure what FF they are planning to ship but you might want to check that out. You may just want to upgrade to Mageia 4 when the time comes for its release. I doubt that will be a long time after the release of the RC.

I got that information from a blog. One of the kind you can usually trust. The Mageia blog;
http://blog.mageia.org/en/2013/11/19...ia-4-schedule/

I did find this although I am not sure what it means for Linux versions;
http://downloads.yahoo.com/firefox/blocked

I also checked the FF beta version which is 27. That seems available.
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/beta/

I think your best bet is to stick with what your Mageia version offers but it is your box to have FUN with.

Hi

Personally I found that one bug reported for v 26 non-ESR not relevant to me as I use googe-chrome for flash

I download the latest FF and have it unpacked with a desktop icon for it

When there is a update for it, I always get notified before any distro upstream maintainer can package it.

IMHO ESR is mainly for business types who don't want new features but stability

YMMV
