your memberlist
I just thought i should point this out: when you go to the memberlist, (clicking on members button in page header), several of the first members (i dont think) are not real members - just ads. their homepages are all:
//URL removed
and i found this somewhat disturbing, but i know it is not this sites fault. i just thought i should bring this to attention so you can remove some of these (most of these "members" names begin with a "!" so it will be first on the list.
Judging by the name of the link that the original poster included, I think it may be worth considering adding a new rule to the set of official LQ Rules, just below the first rule:
Do not post any URL's to sites/pages that contain obscene, vulgar, sexually-orientated, hateful, threatening, or unlawful content/materials.
Same deal for warez, etc. It's too bad that some people seem to go out of their way to create hassles for others, but if people are willing to stoop to these kinds of tricks then it would be easy for an unethical person to disguise a link to an inappropriate site as a "helpful" link in an otherwise unremarkable post or in the sig block. Like everything else I post, just my 2 cents -- J.W.
I'd agree with you on that. But, that won't prevent ppl from giving out such crappy links. So, I'd say a regular check needs to be conducted to make sure.
I don't see how anybody can conduct a regular check of 100,000 members. Some strings could be simply disallowed (I'm assuming vBulletin has this option), but that wouldn't really help much either. They could just alter the spelling or something. This kind of thing is certain to occur in sites of this size. It's annoying, but I don't think there's a way around it.
I guess members would need to support this drive. Divide the pages between members, say I do the first 8 pages, you the next 8, some other member the next 8 ... and so on.
I don't recommend this for the moderators because they already have their hands full<That's what I think> Anyways they are doing a pretty good job at the forums.
I volunteer to check the pages myself. Will get to it from Sunday evening (I have to give a paper in the morning).
The main reason why I don't recommend this to be done by mods--
I don't want my poster at the inside of the door to their room being used for dart target practice.
