World biggest LUG
 

Hello all,

I kinda have a suggestion, might be a big one one but I also think it would be pretty cool. I live in a small town as I am sure there are other users who do. We have no local LUG in this area and have no where to turn for computer users of like mind. I think it would be cool if LQ would have something like a world wide LUG web based with something like maybe monthly chats and they could be specific to the distro or such? The transcripts could be put on the boards for the people who missed them to look over. Yes LQ is more then great for answering questions but what if this could be included? People could learn about the un asked questions like doing stuff under the hood of linux/bsd ect, people could sign up for the LUG with there current username and LQ could ask some senior knowledgeable member if they would like to head a LUG for a certain distro. Maybe like java based chat system or something?

You have a great idea. I am in a town with no LUG. Will you lead the LUG? I can give great Linux and FreeBSD technical support but I am no leader. If LQ will not host us I will donate a website, and domain name. I do not have enough time to create the site alone but, I believe a lot of good people might be willing to contribute.

This is something I have considered before, and I think the idea has a lot of merit. It would take a considerable amount of work, but I think it would be worth it. Let me look into it a bit more. In the meantime, if anyone has any ideas on this, feel free to post here or contact me. Thanks.

I Would love to be wise enough to head a LUG but I am not. I can come up with some good ideas some times and could contribute them but that would be about it. I wish some more people would jump in let let Jeremy know what they think.

Go for it Jeremy, I'm all for a LQ LUG and chat sessions of any kind relating to Linux, Mac OS X, and/or the *BSDs.

Craigwd can you set up a IRC channel? Do you mind being a channel operater? I am in #WorldLUG irc.freenode.net I do not know how to setup a channel. I will idel in the chanel to keep it open for now.

I don't know, I've never tried to do it before. What do I do to set one up? Oh, and BTW I'll do it for jeremy myself if someone tells me how and assuming jeremy's ok with it. Not on my website though, here on LQ.

Just join the channel a friend just set it up

I'm sure Jeremy's got enough on his plate.

This is a great idea, though. Perhaps it might be more prudent to spin off a single LUG to begin with, and distro-specifics following later.

Of course, there'd have to be monthly newsletter or *news* post if this is done forum style. A mailing list or IRC chat date might suffice. Perhaps more of a "planning circle" rather than a LUG leader, would do more good.

I've never begun anything of this nature, and my linux skills are probably best described as mediocre, but I'd be glad to help in any way possible.

sounds cool. You would need to make sure that people couldn't speak all at once, because a chat can quickly disentergrate.

That may be true in alot of ways but...What about the new to linux people that have no idea about cron or have no idea how to write a simple script to preform a certain function? If they don't know about it they will not ask. These things could be brought up in a LUG and tought or discussed. I think that the more people learn about linux (noob) the more they will want to stick with it. It could be a place to show people the neat little insider secrets in linux, and as us seasoned users know there are alot of them. I know how to keep my box running, I know about some of the inside stuff but ask me an advanced question and I would be completely lost. Lq is great and a great place for something like this with its user base.

Jeremy You have a great site here at LQ. My suggestion for the LUG are purely for a place for people to learn the inside secrets of linux, the unasked questions. Maybe a forum for tips and tricks would suffice. But I think the idea of a LQ LUG would be great if it could be implemented. Maybe a place to post statements rather then questions. Like for just giving lessons or something for a specific task in linux. Shell scripting, Cron, Stuff like that, stuff that a new person would not ask about because they don't know about it. Maybe chat on irc? LQ offers plenty and more to the person with questions. But...at the same time you have alot of questions that go unasked and that would be where a LUG could step in and lend an insightful hand.
