WHy does this site use vBulletin instead of phpBB2?

WHy does this site use vBulletin instead of phpBB2? I'm not trying to be a wise guy, and I don't have great expertise between the differences between the 2. I know that phpBB2 is open source and has a great support community. I am interested in hearing thoughts on this subject. Many thanks. a.t.

I think it's because it comes with more features by default so the owners and admins don't have to use a lot of time installing hacks, and re-applying them every time a new version comes out.
That's annoying about phpBB, but phpBB has a LOT more potential functionality than vB or IPB.
I run a phpBB forum so I know how irritating it is. ;)

There is also the issue that phpBB has had more than its share of security problems. Even though I uses phpBB for a small board, I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone because of the security problems. That is one piece of kit you REALLY gotta keep patched.

phpBB has had an unusually large number of security issues over the years. Just had a quick visit to the site and I see that v2.2 still hasn't been released which doesn't stand up much for them. vB has a very stong userbase (as does phpBB I know) but from an admin point-of-view, it runs rings all around phpBB.

This is asked quite frequently and the main reason this site doesn't use phpbb is that phpbb was not around when this forum was created originally.

There weren't alot of choices to make and vbulletin was one of the better options at the time.

And I'd agree with the recent number of security patches that phpbb has. I don't recommend it to anyone any longer, doesn't have a very good track record any longer.

Plus Jeremy has hacked up the original code so much on this site, most could consider this his own forum software based off vbulletin.

Now next time try searching this site as this question has been asked numerous times over the years, which I don't know why, who cares what is used, I care only if the site is functional and secure.
