There isn't one. The only way to talk to other members is via LQ itself. No chat room, IRC, AIM or anything. Just the forum.

Thanks for the feedback. We have no plans to add an "official" VOIP chat room of any kind at this time.

If anyone is interested in any sort of offsite chatroom or whatever, please note that this will not be official and will not be supported by anyone of the staff here. Honestly, if that's your thing, I'd avoid putting LQ in the title at all and just call it something else.

The idea itself is entertaining though... I mean how long would it take for an OP to ask his/her question? And how would your average "try distro X" spam reply sound like? Or a thumbs up? Or moderation? I'm thinking pt. II of the Alien quadrilogy:

I think the reason we don't have a chatroom or VOIP is because LQ is for all users, not just the ones in the present. Recording questions and answers in a forum format means that people with questions in the future might be able to solve them immediately through using a search.

True. Other methods or formats may seem more convenient from a (single) user point of view but the fact LQ still grows and tops search results shows this format "Just Works".

I'd have no use for it, but that might just be me. FWIW, I switched from Yahoo Mail because they added instant chat to the mail page. Haven't figured out exactly what they were thinking. If I wanted to chat, I would've logged into IM!

To emphasize titanium_geek's comment, one key benefit that the LQ forums provide is that Linux questions/answers/information are both searchable as well as permanent -- anyone can retrieve the information they're looking for at any time.

In contrast, in a phone call or chat room, any information that is exchanged is available only to the people participating at that time. As a result, assuming that an answer solves the given problem, that answer would only be of benefit to the one or two people who might be dialed in at that time. If that answer is posted here at LQ, it will be of benefit to thousands of people.
