What is considered 'advertising'

Would promoting a non-profit site, dedicated to free software be considered as advertising? What are the rules?

From the Rules
There is no selling allowed in the forums. If you are interested in advertising you can email ads@linuxquestions.org.
Of course, if in doubt, email Jeremy.

And hello Squall, not seen you around for a while.

Squall, a lot of it has to do with context and judgment. If a regular member posts a link promoting a non-profit OSS site, it would not be considered advertising. However, if a member who signed up 2 minutes ago and has 0 posts starts promoting a site, it likely will be taken as advertising. It's usually easy to tell what the motive is.
