What are Buddies?

I didn't find any hint on this site, so I ask here: What happens, when I put somebody in the "buddies list"? Except for having a list of people with whom I presumably solved problems? Does it do something during browsing this site? Or ... what?

AFAIK you will see them in your buddies online list in your User CP. Just another type of notification when your "buddies" are browsing the forums.
