Utility Wanted Thread

Suppose you want a utility for a specific purpose, or someone can direct you to one that has a function or aspect that will suit your needs. The sticky thread 'Sticky: What programs would you like to see ported to Linux?' is close, but my suggestion would probably be useful as well. Feedback is welcome, of course.

Technically, I could see what you mean by this, but it depends upon categories; Are you talking about more general programs/utilities, or just overall programs all together?

I would say general use utilities, stuff that the average Linux user would need on a daily or occasional basis. Like the following:

Text manipulation. Basic editors & word processors

Image - photos, etc.

Sound - players & editors

Programmer's utilities too.

Some utilities may be great, but it's rare to have one that has Everything you could want. For example, I'd like to see advanced text manipulation & formatting. I have text files that I convert to PDF, & there are concerns about pagination, page layout, page numbers, etc. Leafpad & Abiword are good for different things, but they can't handle everything. OpenOffice has an option to export your work to PDF, but it can be a resource hog.

Thanks for responding.

Having everything in one thread would make it a big mess and would most probably make it impossible to find what you're looking for. What's wrong with the existing practice where if I'm looking for a utility to perform a particular job, I open a thread in eg. Software section: "Looking for a program that would batch process my holiday pics". IMHO, it's much cleaner.

A similar thing could be said about the sticky thread I mentioned. Specifically programs from other platforms that could be ported to Linux. An issue there is 'strictly utilities, or games too?' And what if the program blurs the lines, like game creation apps? 'Is it a game or is it a utility?'
Besides, I didn't look closely enough at the software forum - I thought it was mainly for addressing bugs.

I personally don't see it that way. The sticky about porting request is a thread where people will just post their suggestion and rarely visit or search this thread after that. In other words, I don't think that thread is directly useful to any of us. I mean I don't revisit it to search for something. That's where I see the difference. Obviously, it's just my perception
