unsubscribing from a thread is different
 

I notice that the procedure for unsubscribing from a thread is now slightly different. It used to be that in your post, you'd simply click "Thread Tools" (or right-click, I forget which) in the upper right; and a few options, including unsubscribe, would appear. Now, clicking Thread Tools takes you to near the bottom of the page on the left side, where you can click unsunscribe there. This works and isn't significantly more difficult, but the previous method was equally easy and slightly simpler. I see no reason to have changed it.

Nothing had changed on our end. The procedure you're describing indicates you now have javascript disabled (and previously didn't).

Oh, sorry. But I don't get it. I now have NoScript installed, but I have already told it to allow all the scripts it lists for LQ.

I realize you specifically cited whether I had Javascript enabled, not whether any scripts were blocked; but I checked Edit-->Preferences and found "Enable Javascript" checked.

We serve some javascript from domains in addition to www.linuxquestions.org. You'll need to completely disable noscript for LQ or individually add each domain to a whitelist (or deal with the fallback functionality).

I was starting to guess that. I thought I had allowed all the scripts Noscript lists for LQ, but I'm not sure anymore. I guess I must have allowed them only temporarily, because Noscript is displaying "Revoke Temporary Permissions." But I had visited another site and temporarily allowed all scripts, because that site uses more scripts than LQ and I largely couldn't use the site without them. Then I went back to LQ, and saw that the pull-down menus in the upper right were back.

The other site must use some of the same script sources (domains?) as LQ, and by temporarily allowing them there, I allowed them on LQ--right? That has to be it, because I haven't adjusted the script permissions for LQ in any way today.

The menus you are talking about seem to rely upon being able to run scripts from ajax.googleapis.com. In addition to this the functionality of LQ relies upon being able to run scripts from thequestionsnetwork.org and netdna-ssl.com.
